The way you present products in your eCommerce store plays a pivotal role in attracting and engaging customers. Organizing your products into an attractive grid layout not only enhances the visual appeal of your store but also makes it more user-friendly. Customers can compare their purchasing options and add multiple products to their shopping cart without having to navigate to another page.

However, for many WooCommerce store owners, the process of setting up these grid layouts can be a bit perplexing.

In this article, we’ll guide you through the advantages of using product grids and introduce you to the top six product grid plugins available in 2023. Additionally, we’ll provide a quick tutorial to get you started using our personal favorite plugin. By the end of this read, you’ll be well-equipped to navigate the world of product grids with confidence.

Why is a well-organized product grid essential?

A well-organized product grid plays a crucial role in WooCommerce, and its significance cannot be overstated. Let’s start by understanding what a product grid is: it’s a layout where multiple products are neatly showcased side by side.

Now, why does this matter? Imagine walking into a well-arranged store where items are displayed logically. Similarly, a well-organized product grid creates a seamless user experience, making it effortless for customers to explore and compare products. This convenience translates into a potential boost in sales – when customers find it easy to navigate and compare, they’re more likely to make purchases.

The benefits go beyond usability. A polished product grid elevates your site’s appearance, enhancing your brand’s impact on customers. The impression of professionalism and attention to detail goes a long way in building trust and customer loyalty.

Beyond appearances, a well-organized product grid also contributes to better website performance and improved SEO. Search engines appreciate structured content, leading to better search rankings and visibility for your store.

While some WooCommerce themes offer basic grid layouts, you might find them limiting. Here’s where dedicated product grid plugins come in. They provide enhanced options for displaying products, including improved layouts and advanced features like filtering – features that might surpass what your theme offers. Additionally, these plugins empower you to extend product grids beyond the standard shop page, allowing you to display them on your homepage or other landing pages, thus enhancing the overall shopping experience throughout your store.

While the default settings in WooCommerce are designed to accommodate a wide range of retail scenarios, they might not perfectly align with the diverse needs of every business. One common challenge faced by store owners is the default quantity increment of 1, which might not suit all types of products or customer preferences.

Consider the scenario of wholesalers, trade-only shops, and businesses dealing in bulk quantities. For these enterprises, selling in larger increments or quantities is not just a convenience but often a necessity. Imagine a wholesale distributor attempting to sell individual items rather than in bulk – it not only disrupts the ordering process but also undermines the efficiency that such businesses thrive upon.

This is where the concept of quantity increments comes into play. The ability to allow customers to order in predefined quantities that align with the nature of the products being sold is a pivotal aspect of a streamlined purchasing process. Such increments not only enhance the customer experience but also contribute to transparent communication, mitigating the chances of misunderstandings and costly errors.

In this comprehensive guide, we delve into the intricacies of setting up quantity increments in WooCommerce. From the technical aspects of configuring your store to facilitate smooth order quantities to the art of communicating these increments effectively to customers, we’ve got you covered. We’ll explore the pitfalls of overlooking this crucial feature and showcase how getting it right can lead to a seamless shopping experience and bolstered customer satisfaction.

Let’s dive in and unlock the power of precise ordering experiences with WooCommerce!

Understanding the importance of quantity increments in WooCommerce

Quantity increments refer to predefined steps by which the quantity of a product can be adjusted when placing an order. Rather than allowing customers to order any arbitrary quantity, quantity increments impose a structured approach, enabling customers to select quantities that align with specific values or packages. Here’s why adding quantity increment rules in your shop page can enable you to optimize the user experience, manage orders, and potentially increase sales:

  • Efficient wholesale and bulk transactions: For businesses dealing with wholesale or bulk orders, quantity increments establish a logical and cost-effective ordering process. By setting predefined quantities, you streamline the transactional flow and ensure that the cost of shipping aligns with the quantities ordered.
    • Use Case: Imagine you run a wholesale office supply store catering to businesses that regularly order in bulk. One of your popular products is printer paper, usually ordered in packs of 50 reams. By setting up quantity increments with a step of 50, customers can easily order in multiples of 50 reams.
  • Precise inventory management: Quantity increments play a pivotal role in efficient inventory management. They allow you to move stock more strategically by encouraging customers to order in specific quantities. This helps prevent overstocking and ensures that your inventory remains in line with actual demand.
    • Use Case: Let’s say you manage an electronics store selling laptop batteries. These batteries are commonly sold in packs of 5 to cater to laptop repair businesses. By implementing quantity increments with a step of 5, you encourage customers to order in these sets.
  • Rapid clearing of products: When it comes to clearing out products, quantity increments become a valuable tool. By setting up minimum order quantities, you motivate customers to purchase larger quantities, facilitating the clearing of old or slow-moving inventory.
    • Use Case: Consider a fashion retailer with a surplus of last season’s apparel. To swiftly clear out these products, you set a minimum order quantity increment of 10 for clearance items. By doing so, you motivate customers to purchase larger quantities, making the remaining inventory move faster. This approach allows you to free up space for new arrivals and prevent stale inventory from occupying valuable shelf space.
  • Viable minimum quantity rules: Setting minimum quantity rules through increments ensures that your sales remain economically viable, especially for low-value items. Customers are prompted to meet these minimum thresholds, optimizing shipping costs and preventing inefficient small orders.
    • Use Case: In the realm of cosmetics, selling individual makeup samples might not be cost-effective due to shipping expenses. By implementing a minimum quantity rule, such as a step of 5, you encourage customers to order a minimum of 5 samples in a single purchase.

How do you increase product quantity in WooCommerce

While WooCommerce by default doesn’t come with the option to set custom quantity increments, it’s very possible to add this functionality to your store. Developers can dive into the site’s functions.php file within the child theme to add the functionality, but for non-developers and most WooCommerce store owners, using plugins is the better option.

Plugins offer a secure and user-friendly solution, sparing shop owners the complexities of coding. Once you’ve selected and installed the suitable WooCommerce plugin, adjusting quantity increments becomes straightforward, ensuring seamless website functionality.

How to evaluate which quality increment plugin is right for you?

When it comes to optimizing your WooCommerce store for quantity increments, the right plugin can make all the difference. As you embark on this journey, it’s crucial to keep an eye out for key features that empower you to fine-tune your store’s ordering experience. Here are the fundamental aspects to consider when evaluating a quantity increments plugin:

  • Global and individual customization: A robust plugin should provide the flexibility to configure quantity increments both globally and on an individual basis. This means you can define standard increment rules for your entire store, while also having the ability to fine-tune quantities for specific products.
  • Tailored quantity options: Look for a plugin that grants you control over incremental steps for items sold either individually or in bulk. This level of customization ensures that each product can adhere to its unique ordering requirements.
  • Text and messaging: An exceptional WooCommerce plugin goes beyond functionality and allows you to add descriptive text to replace numerical quantities, as well as error labels to highlight quantity rules. This enhances clarity for your customers and can serve as a strategic tool to encourage larger orders.
  • Dropdown quantity selection: The ability to employ a dropdown list for your quantity field offers users a rapid and intuitive way to select from available increment options. This ensures that customers quickly comprehend the quantities they can order, leading to a smoother purchasing process.

Testing and best practices to optimize quantity increments in your WooCommerce store

Setting up quantity increments in your WooCommerce store isn’t just about enhancing the ordering process—it’s also a valuable avenue for collecting insightful data about your sales strategy. To ensure you’re harnessing this feature to its fullest potential, it’s essential to follow testing and optimization best practices. Here’s how to effectively measure and refine your quantity increment strategies:

  • Utilize quantitative insights: The implementation of quantity increments provides a unique vantage point into customer purchasing behavior. Pay attention to trends and patterns that emerge as you introduce or modify increments. Are customers responding positively? Are there certain products or categories where these increments have a more pronounced impact.
  • Continuous monitoring: To gauge the effectiveness of your modifications, compare sales rates before and after implementing new quantity increments. A decline in sales could indicate a misalignment with customer preferences or confusion in the ordering process. Conversely, an increase signifies that your approach is resonating with your audience.
  • Identify patterns: As you periodically check the impact of your quantity increment changes, look for recurring patterns. Consider checking on a weekly or monthly basis to capture both short-term and longer-term trends. These patterns can provide invaluable insights into customer behavior and the success of your optimization efforts.
  • Iterate and refine: The beauty of data-driven optimization lies in its iterative nature. Use the information you gather to refine your quantity increment strategies. If certain increments aren’t yielding the expected results, consider tweaking them or trying different approaches. The ability to adapt and fine-tune is key to maximizing the benefits of this feature.

Use quantity increments to take your WooCommerce shop to the next level

In this article, we’ve looked at the benefits of customizing quantity increments in your WooCommerce store, which is especially important for bulk wholesalers but can be equally important in a range of other use cases. Setting custom quantity increments makes the ordering process more efficient and allows you to manage your inventory better while selling in higher volumes.

It’s important to choose an intuitive plugin like WooCommerce Minimum Maximum Quantity and Order that offers seamless compatibility with your existing website and plugins and comes pre-built with advanced quantity features. Whether you’re running a boutique fashion outlet or a tech-centric emporium, integrating add-ons can significantly elevate your online store’s appeal.

Product add-ons provide WooCommerce store owners with opportunities to create personalized shopping experiences for their customers. This way, shoppers can fully personalize and create unique products before adding them to their cart.

Imagine providing customers with the option to add a touch of elegance by selecting gift wrap for their purchases, or granting them the freedom to personalize products according to their preferences. These possibilities are made tangible through the utilization of add-ons in WooCommerce. And the best part? You don’t need to be a coding wizard to make it happen.

Since WooCommerce by default doesn’t let you add product add-ons, store owners can use plugins to easily incorporate this functionality into their sites. Plugins not only simplify the processing of adding add-ons to your site but also fit well into your workflow and (most of the time) will be compatible with your theme. This ensures you don’t encounter design issues on your WordPress site.

We’ve compared some of the best plugins out there and created a guide you can use to figure out which WooCommerce product plugin will work best for your shop.

In the fast-paced world of eCommerce, the allure of offering a variety of low-priced products is undeniable. It’s a strategy that attracts users and encourages them to explore your offerings. However, the cumulative effect of numerous low-price orders can unexpectedly saddle you with shipping and handling costs that end up surpassing the actual value of the items being sold.

Thankfully, there’s a strategic remedy to safeguard your profits – setting minimum order amounts. By instituting this practice, you not only shield yourself from the risk of diminishing returns but also foster a more sustainable business model. There are two key ways of doing this:

  • Quantity per product: Set a minimum quantity of items per product, ensuring transactions meet a threshold to cover shipping costs effectively.
  • Cart total: Establish a minimum total order value for the entire shopping cart, encouraging customers to explore more products while maintaining profitability.

WooCommerce lacks built-in support for this feature, but there’s a practical solution for non-technical store owners: plugins. We recommend using the “Minimum and Maximum Quantity for WooCommerce (MMQOP)” plugin. It offers an intuitive way to set minimum order quantities without needing to write code.

In this article, we’ll guide you through installing, configuring, and leveraging the WooCommerce Minimum Maximum Quantity and Order plugin to establish effective minimum order quantities for your WooCommerce store.

Understanding the importance of minimum order amounts in WooCommerce

Minimum order amounts play a pivotal role in optimizing eCommerce profitability. These thresholds define the minimum requirement customers must meet when placing an order. They come in various forms, including quantity-based thresholds (for example, at least 10 items), total cart value (for example, at least $40 worth of items), or default amounts. These safeguards are especially crucial for specific industries, like trade-only shops, where efficient order handling is paramount.

When these thresholds are ignored, profit margins can be significantly impacted. Shipping costs, if insufficiently offset by the order’s value, can erode or even surpass the profits generated from the sale. This scenario becomes particularly problematic for businesses dealing with low-cost items. Addressing these concerns is essential to ensure sustained profitability and operational viability.

Benefits of setting minimum order amounts in your store

Setting minimum order amounts on your WooCommerce product pages can be useful for store owners in several ways:

  • Enhanced transaction value: Minimum order amounts inherently encourage customers to add more items to their carts, increasing the average transaction value and subsequently boosting revenue.
  • Bulk purchases: These thresholds serve as a catalyst for bulk purchases, as customers strive to meet the minimum requirements. This not only augments revenue but also aligns with efficient inventory management.
  • Product-specific thresholds: Tailoring minimum order amounts to different product types can yield substantial advantages. High-margin or slow-moving items can have higher thresholds, ensuring they contribute meaningfully to the bottom line.
  • Positive customer impact: By encouraging larger purchases, minimum order amounts can lead to customer satisfaction by delivering increased value and potentially lowering the frequency of small, resource-intensive transactions.

Methods to enable minimum order amounts in WooCommerce

There are two methods you can follow to enable minimum order amounts in WooCommerce: implementing it without plugins through code modifications, or using plugins for a no-coding-needed approach.

Setting up minimum order amounts without plugins

For those who seek granular control and have coding expertise, setting up minimum order amounts without plugins can be enticing. This approach is chosen for several reasons:

  • Control and customization: Some store owners desire greater control over their website’s functionality and aesthetics, and avoiding plugins can provide this level of customization.
  • Plugin conflicts: By sidestepping plugins, the risk of conflicts with other existing plugins can be minimized, ensuring a smoother operation.
  • Long-term development: Businesses with expansive customization needs may opt for this approach, as it allows them to collaborate with developers for sustained site enhancement.

However, for most non-developer store owners, adding code directly is not recommended due to its complexity. For instance, the WooCommerce documentation provides code to establish a minimum order amount (source), but this should only be attempted by experienced developers.

WooCommerce minimum order code snippet

This method requires you to edit the functions.php file of your site and add custom code to it. Once you add the code to your site, customers will have to reach the minimum order amount or they will see a warning message on the checkout page.

Bear in mind that this code solution applies a global minimum order rule and doesn’t accommodate varying amounts for different products. You could, of course, modify this code by working with a developer, but given the costs and complexities involved, we recommend setting up minimum order amounts on your WooCommerce site using plugins.

Setting up minimum order amounts with plugins

For an approach that doesn’t require coding expertise, utilizing plugins offers distinct advantages:

  • Ease of use: Plugins streamline the process, making it accessible to non-technical store owners.
  • Additional features: Many plugins provide advanced features like setting varying rules for minimum and maximum order quantities, allowing flexibility to cater to different product types.
  • Reduced risk: Plugins come with less inherent risk than manually altering code, which can impact site stability if not executed correctly.
  • Theme flexibility: Using plugins ensures your customizations are portable, allowing you to switch themes without losing your setup.

One prominent plugin that excels in simplifying the setup of minimum order amounts is the WooCommerce Minimum Maximum Quantity and Order plugin. Its user-friendly interface empowers store owners to establish effective minimum order thresholds, making it an ideal solution for businesses seeking simplicity and efficiency.

WooCommerce Minimum Maximum Quantity and Order plugin: the ultimate solution for quantity control

The WooCommerce Minimum Maximum Quantity and Order plugin is an all-in-one solution for setting up minimum and maximum order rules on your WooCommerce site.

WooCommerce Minimum Maximum Quantity and Order

Maximise your store’s revenue by setting rules on quantity and values

Using the plugin, you can create both order value rules as well as quantity rules for individual products or all products in your online store. This enables store owners to sell products that can only be profitable if sold in higher quantities or restrict wholesalers from buying out all of a product’s stock by specifying a maximum quantity limit.

Additionally, the WooCommerce Minimum Maximum Quantity and Order plugin offers advanced quantity management for individual products, the total cost of orders, and the total number of products in the order. You have complete control over the customizability of your quantity or value rules and can showcase drop-down lists as quantity selectors to create a more interactive shopping experience on your online store.

Let’s take a look at how you can use WooCommerce Minimum Maximum Quantity and Order’s minimum and maximum value or quantity rules for managing your WooCommerce products:

Example 1: Set default quantity

Customer testimonials also point to the usefulness of the WooCommerce Minimum Maximum Quantity and Order plugin:

“I have a trade-only store where customers must buy 6, 12, 18, etc of any of the products they choose – in multiples of 6 – and the grand total must be not less than 120. WooCommerce Minimum Maximum Quantity and Order does exactly that – and is easy to set up.”

WooCommerce Minimum Maximum Quantity and Order is also very affordable compared to other solutions and Plugin Republic’s 14-day money-back guarantee gives store owners a risk-free opportunity to try the plugin.

How to use the WooCommerce Minimum Maximum Quantity and Order plugin

In this tutorial, we’ll cover the steps you need to follow to set up the WooCommerce Minimum Maximum Quantity and Order plugin to create minimum and maximum value or quantity rules on your WooCommerce site.

Step#1: Install and activate the plugin

Once you get the WooCommerce Minimum Maximum Quantity and Order plugin, navigate to Plugins → Add New and upload the plugin’s ZIP file.

Click on the Install Now button and then Activate this plugin to continue. Once the plugin is installed and activated, navigate to WooCommerce → Settings → Min Max and click on the Licence link from the top.

Enter the license key given to you at the time of purchase and click on the Save changes button to continue.

Step#2: Setup minimum and maximum rules

Once you install the WooCommerce Minimum Maximum Quantity and Order plugin on your WordPress site, navigate to WooCommerce → Min Max Rules and click on the Add New button.

New min max rule

After giving your rule a title, select whether you want to apply it to all products on your shop, or for specific products or product categories.

Set minimum value

The Value Rules meta box lets you set the minimum and maximum values. For instance, you can set it up so customers will have to add products worth at least $50 to check out from your WooCommerce site.

Setting quantity rules

Using the Quantity Rules section, you can start specifying the default WooCommerce quantity increment and custom quantities for all products affected by this rule. For example, if you run an apparel store that sells all products in step intervals of 2, you can set the Quantity Increment field to 2 and set the Minimum Quantity field to 2, as well. For displaying a better quantity selector on the front-end, make sure to select the Display as drop-down checkbox.

WooCommerce minimum order for user roles

Additionally, you can also create rules for specific user roles on your WooCommerce site. For instance, only set minimum and maximum value rules for regular customers while subscribers can shop without any restrictions. Click on the Publish button to continue.

The WooCommerce Minimum Maximum Quantity and Order plugin also lets you set up custom error messages when users don’t meet the shopping requirements of your online store. For this, navigate to WooCommerce → Settings → Min Max and click on the Error Messages link from the top.

Error messages

You can set up custom messages to inform your customers when they don’t meet certain requirements. It’s a great way to offer your customers more context on what’s going on with their orders and prompts them to add more items to their cart or increase cart value before checking out. Once you’re ready, make sure to click on the Save changes button to continue.

Step #3: Preview

Customers will have to exceed a certain value so the minimum quantity of products will automatically be selected.

Polo

If users try to purchase a product without considering the minimum value rule, they will see an error message and won’t be able to add the product to their shopping cart.

Communicating minimum order amounts to customers effectively

Clear and transparent communication of minimum order amounts is paramount in ensuring a smooth shopping experience and minimizing potential issues such as customer confusion, discouragement, and order errors. Failing to communicate these thresholds effectively can lead to customer frustration and, ultimately, cart abandonment.

Importance of clear communication

  • Avoiding confusion: Clearly outlining minimum order requirements prevents customers from being caught off guard during the checkout process. This transparency builds trust and fosters a positive shopping experience.
  • Preventing discouragement: When customers are informed about minimum order amounts upfront, they can make informed decisions about whether to proceed with the purchase. This prevents them from feeling discouraged or surprised by unexpected requirements.
  • Mitigating order mistakes: Clarity in communication reduces the likelihood of customers accidentally submitting orders that don’t meet the minimum threshold. This prevents unnecessary adjustments or cancellations post-purchase.

Strategies for effective communication

  • Clear and concise language: Utilize customizable labels and error messages that use straightforward and concise language. Messages like “Minimum order amount not met” or “Please add more items to meet the minimum requirement” communicate the situation clearly.
  • Product descriptions and additional information: Include minimum order details in product descriptions or utilize the “Additional Information” tab to outline the minimum requirements for each product. This proactive approach ensures customers are aware before even adding items to their carts.
  • Visual cues: Implement visual cues such as icons or badges that signify products eligible for purchase only if the minimum order is met. These cues serve as reminders throughout the shopping experience.
  • Checkout process: Display a prominent notification during the checkout process, indicating the remaining amount needed to meet the minimum order threshold. This real-time reminder can prompt customers to add more items if necessary.

Other strategies for setting minimum order requirements on products

Now that you know how to set up minimum order rules in your store and how to communicate them, it’s important to also learn how to incentivize your customers to comply with these rules and complete their shopping experiences. Here are a few strategies for you to try:

Offer discounts for bulk orders

Encouraging customers to exceed minimum order requirements can be achieved through enticing incentives. By offering discounts, free shipping, or bonus products for orders that surpass the threshold, you create a win-win scenario. Customers are motivated to increase their order value, benefiting from added value, while you boost average transaction amounts. For the seamless implementation of such strategies, consider using the WooCommerce Fees and Discounts plugin, which lets you create custom pricing incentives on your online store.

WooCommerce Fees and Discounts

Create powerful pricing incentives quickly and easily

Find Out More

Using the plugin, you can create bulk percentages or fixed discounts globally or for specific products on your WooCommerce site. You can also set up more complex discounts like BOGOF offers or set up discounts based on the total value in the cart or selected payment gateway. The WooCommerce Fees and Discounts plugin is a “one-off” solution for setting up any type of discount on your online store.

You can use both the WooCommerce Fees and Discounts and the WooCommerce Minimum Maximum Quantity and Order plugins together to create a more powerful shopping experience on your online store. For example, you can offer discounts or incentives for larger orders which works perfectly with minimum order quantity or value rules created with the WooCommerce Minimum Maximum Quantity and Order plugin.

Setting up minimum order rules based on user-roles

Tailoring minimum order requirements based on user roles adds a layer of personalization to your e-commerce strategy. For scenarios where special pricing or purchasing privileges are reserved for specific user groups, employing this approach is beneficial. The WooCommerce Members Only plugin allows you to assign user roles and grant them access to unique purchasing rules.

WooCommerce Members Only

Protect your content and sell members-only products

Find Out More

The intuitive plugin comes prebuilt with all the functionality you need to create a private ecommerce site for members. This way, if you sell to both wholesale customers and regular customers, you can hide wholesale pricing or products from regular customers.

The WooCommerce Members Only plugin also seamlessly integrates with minimum and maximum quantity rules created using WooCommerce Minimum Maximum Quantity and Order. This way, you can create specific quantity rules for your wholesale customers (that do not apply to regular customers) who might want to add larger quantities.

Next steps: Implementing minimum order amounts in your WooCommerce store

Implementing minimum order amounts not only lets store owners sell products with different minimum order quantities but is a great way to encourage bulk purchases and boost the average transaction value on your online store.

Since WooCommerce by default doesn’t have functionality that lets you do this, you can use a dedicated plugin like WooCommerce Minimum Maximum Quantity and Order. It lets you set up minimum and maximum order quantities for specific products or all products on your online store without having to touch a single line of code.

Product variations in WooCommerce offer a powerful way for store owners to present diverse styles of products in a user-friendly manner. They allow customers to choose from an array of options, such as size, color, or material, all conveniently displayed on a single product page. By using variations, businesses can efficiently manage and showcase their products, enhancing the overall shopping experience.

However, any glitches or errors with your product variation display can have a detrimental impact on your site’s usability and even lead to lost sales. To maintain a seamless shopping experience and maximize conversions, it’s crucial to promptly troubleshoot and resolve any issues with WooCommerce variations not showing.

In this article, we’ll cover some of the most common issues with WooCommerce product variations not displaying properly and how to fix them. Then, we’ll provide some top tips for enhancing your product variation display with the help of some highly recommended plugins.

Common WooCommerce product variations issues

WooCommerce product variations play a pivotal role in offering customers a diverse range of choices when shopping online. Properly displaying these variations is vital for providing a seamless customer experience and maximizing sales potential. When variations are showcased correctly, it enhances product visibility, encourages user engagement, and ultimately boosts conversion rates.

Conversely, encountering issues with product variations not displaying properly can have adverse effects on your online store. Here are the most common issues WooCommerce store owners face when it comes to displaying product variations:

  • One of the common problems is the variations tab not showing correctly in the product data section of the WooCommerce backend, which hinders the store owner’s ability to configure and manage product options efficiently.
  • On the front-end, customers may face challenges when variation featured images or data fail to display correctly, leading to confusion and potential frustration during the shopping process.
  • Some or all variation options may not appear on the front-end, limiting customers’ ability to make personalized choices.

The major reasons behind the WooCommerce variation display not showing are incorrect settings, theme or plugin conflicts, and your version of WordPress, WooCommerce, or specific plugins being out of date. In the next section, we’ll dive deeper into how you can resolve these common issues on your WooCommerce site.

Step-by-step guide to fixing WooCommerce variations

Resolving most of the issues with WooCommerce variation display is often straightforward to do, even if you’re not very tech-savvy. Let’s go over the main steps for identifying and fixing issues with product variations in WooCommerce, starting with the two most likely culprits:

Missing price for variations

One of the most common reasons for product variations not displaying is the absence of prices for those variations. If you’ve created variations but haven’t assigned prices to them, customers won’t see the options when viewing the product. To fix this:

  • Go to the product editing page in WooCommerce.
  • Navigate to the “Variations” tab.
  • Ensure that each variation has a valid and appropriate price assigned.

Variation marked as out of stock

If a variation is marked as out of stock, it won’t be displayed to customers who are browsing your store. To address this:

  • Access the product editing page for the affected product.
  • Visit the “Variations” tab.
  • Check the stock status of each variation. If a variation is out of stock, either update the stock quantity or mark it as “In Stock” if applicable.

Verify product variation settings

If your product variations have assigned prices and are in stock, then it could be you haven’t configured your variations correctly. Follow these steps to verify and configure your product variation settings:

1. Accessing the product edit page:

  • Log in to your WooCommerce admin panel.
  • Navigate to the “Products” tab and select “All Products.”
  • Locate the product for which you want to manage variations and click “Edit.”

2. Configuring attributes and terms:

  • Within the product edit page, navigate to the “Attributes” tab.
  • Ensure that you’ve selected the appropriate attributes for your product. If you need to create a new attribute, you can create a global product attribute by going to WooCommerce>Products>Attributes. Alternatively, you can create a custom product attribute directly in the product page backend, by following the steps below:
    • Click the “Add” button next to the “Custom product attribute” dropdown.
    • Provide a name for the attribute, such as “Logo.”
    • Add attribute values (e.g., “Yes” and “No”) that are relevant to your product.
    • Check the boxes to make the attribute visible on the product page and available for variations.

3. Adding variation details:

  • Scroll down to the “Variations” section on the product edit page.
  • Choose the “Create variations from all attributes” option and click “Go.”
  • WooCommerce will generate variations based on the attributes and terms you’ve set up.
  • Review each variation to ensure accurate pricing, inventory levels, and other relevant details.
Verify product variation settings

4. Saving changes:

  • Once you’ve configured your product variations, click the “Update” button to save your changes.

e. Preview and test:

  • Visit the product page on your WooCommerce storefront to see how the variations are displayed to customers.
  • Test the functionality by selecting different attribute combinations and verifying that prices and availability update accordingly.

Check theme compatibility

If there are integration issues between your current theme and WooCommerce, it could lead to problems with displaying variations. The best way to check this is to test with a default WooCommerce theme:

  • To isolate the issue and determine if it’s related to your current theme, temporarily switch to a default WooCommerce theme like “Storefront.”
  • Visit your website and navigate to a product page with variations. Check if the variations are displayed correctly with the default theme.
  • If the issue is resolved with the default theme, it suggests that there might be a compatibility issue with your original theme.
Check theme compatibility

Resolve plugin conflicts

Conflicts between plugins can lead to unexpected behavior, including the incorrect display of WooCommerce variations. To ensure variations are shown as intended, follow these steps to identify and resolve potential plugin conflicts:

1. Update plugins and WordPress core:

  • Keeping your plugins, including WooCommerce, up-to-date is crucial for a seamless online store experience. Outdated plugins can lead to compatibility issues.
  • Regularly check for updates in your WordPress admin panel under “Plugins” > “Installed Plugins.”
  • Update all plugins and the WordPress core to their latest versions.

2. Clear browser cache:

  • Browser caching can sometimes cause older code to be loaded, affecting the display of your variations.
  • Clear your browser’s cache and cookies to ensure you’re viewing the most recent version of your website.

3. Deactivate plugins methodically:

  • To identify a potential conflicting plugin, deactivate all plugins except for WooCommerce.
  • Test your product pages with variations to see if the issue is resolved. If it is, you’ve confirmed that a plugin is causing the conflict.
  • Reactivate each plugin one by one, testing your variations after each activation.
  • If the issue reappears after activating a specific plugin, you’ve likely found the culprit.

4. Update or replace conflicting plugins:

  • Once you’ve identified the conflicting plugin, check if an update is available. Sometimes, plugin authors release updates to address compatibility issues.
  • If an update doesn’t resolve the conflict, consider searching for alternative plugins that offer similar functionality but are more compatible with your WooCommerce setup.

5. Reach out for support:

  • If you’re unable to identify or resolve the plugin conflict on your own, reach out to the plugin’s support team or community forums for assistance.
  • Provide them with detailed information about the issue, including any error messages or unexpected behavior you’ve observed.

Regenerate thumbnails

In some instances, you may encounter a situation where product thumbnails within WooCommerce fail to display correctly. This can subsequently lead to the absence of featured images for product variations on your website. If you’re encountering this issue, regenerating thumbnails can often be a simple and effective solution. Follow these steps to regenerate thumbnails for your WooCommerce site:

1. Navigate to the thumbnail regeneration tool:

  • Access your WordPress admin panel.
  • Go to “WooCommerce” in the left-hand menu.
  • Choose “Status.”
  • Click on the “Tools” tab.

2. Regenerating the thumbnails

  • Within the “Tools” section, locate the “Regenerate shop thumbnails” option.
  • Click the “Regenerate” button associated with this option.
  • The regeneration process may take some time, depending on the number of products and images on your site.
  • Once the process is complete, you’ll receive a notification confirming the successful regeneration of thumbnails.
Regenerate thumbnails

3. Checking variation images:

  • Navigate to a product page that has variations and featured images.
  • Verify that the thumbnails and featured images for variations are now correctly displayed.

4. Repeat as needed:

  • If you continue to experience thumbnail-related issues, you can repeat the thumbnail regeneration process as necessary.
  • Regularly regenerating thumbnails can also be beneficial when you make significant changes to your products or website design.

Enhancing your WooCommerce product variation display with plugins

Using plugins on your WooCommerce site allows you to enhance the display and functionality of your WooCommerce variable products.

While WooCommerce’s default functionality for displaying variations is a good start, it only lets you show variations in a dropdown list. This isn’t the best for product discovery or user experience on your online store.

Next, let’s take a look at two recommended plugins that help you enhance your WooCommerce product variation display.

We’re going to see how both the WooCommerce Product Table Ultimate and WooCommerce Better Variations plugins can help improve the display of your product variations.

Here you can start configuring plugin settings and optimize the product table that your variable products will be displayed in. The Columns field lets you specify the column fields that will appear on your product table. This means you have full control over what appears on your WooCommerce variations product table.

The Show quantities on add-to-cart column dropdown menu lets you specify whether customers can set and add their desired product quantities from the product table to their shopping cart or not. You can also specify which products will be displayed in a table-style layout using the Product Source.

The WooCommerce Product Table Ultimate plugin also lets you show variations as separate rows, dropdown lists in the table itself, or set the table to redirect users to the product page when they select a variable product. You can specify how variations will be displayed in your product tables using the Variations Display dropdown menu.

WooCommerce variations as separate rows

To provide the best customer experience and facilitate easy variation comparison for your customers, we recommend displaying them as separate rows or selecting the As separate rows option from the dropdown menu.

You can set the order rules and how products will be organized in the product tables using the Order table by and Order fields. You also have the option to display a custom number of products per page on your product tables by customizing the Products per page field.

Add selected to cart

If you’re letting customers select their variation options directly from the product table, it’s a great idea to display checkboxes to let customers add multiple products to their cart at once. For this, make sure to select Yes for both Enable add selected button and Enable add all button drop-down fields.

Once you’re done setting up the product table, click on the Save changes button at the bottom to continue.

Step #3: Preview

You can display product tables anywhere on your WooCommerce site using shortcodes or Gutenberg blocks.

Product Table Ultimate shortcode

This way, customers can view multiple variation options for a single product in a table-style format which makes it easier for them to select multiple options at once.

Show product variations in table layout

By clicking on a single button, customers can add multiple product variations to their shopping cart and checkout from your online store.

Maximize the impact of your product variations

Product variations are a vital aspect of WooCommerce, allowing online store owners to offer customers a wide range of choices and personalized options. Ensuring these variations display correctly is crucial for providing a seamless shopping experience and increasing sales. Promptly addressing any issues with their display is essential to avoid hindering product visibility and user satisfaction.

To fully harness the potential of product variations, dedicated plugins can be invaluable. Two exceptional choices for enhancing variation displays are Product Table Ultimate and Better Variations:

  • The WooCommerce Product Table Ultimate plugin lets you display or list your variations in a table-style layout and display individual product variations in separate rows. This makes it easier for customers to compare multiple product variations and quickly add the ones that suit them the best.
  • If you’re looking for a way to list your variations in a grid, WooCommerce Better Variations will do the job. The plugin offers functionality for disabling out-of-stock variations or styling them in a way that’s easily identifiable by customers.

Displaying “popular products” in WooCommerce can be a great opportunity to upsell or cross-sell products to customers. It helps boost sales and can help you improve the customer experience and product visibility on your WooCommerce site.

While WooCommerce by default offers some functionality to display popular products using shortcodes, you can use plugins to take this to the next level.

In this article, we’ll show you three methods to display popular products on your WooCommerce store and demonstrate how you can level up your popular product display with the help of WooCommerce Product Table Ultimate and WooCommerce Order Bump.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the major advantages of displaying popular products on your WooCommerce store:

  • Boost sales and average order value (AOV). If you’re advertising a list of popular products clearly on your shop’s product pages, the main shop page, or the checkout pages, it creates more opportunities for upselling or cross-selling. As a result, it helps increase sales and encourages shoppers to spend more which ultimately boosts the average order value.
  • Improve customer experience. Displaying best-selling products to your customers as recommendations can streamline the shopping experience on your online store. It helps your customers quickly find what they’re looking for.
  • Showcase social proof. By displaying products that are popular with your existing customers, you can increase customer trust by demonstrating the high quality of the products that you stock at your online store.
  • Increase product visibility. Products that you list as “popular” don’t necessarily have to actually be selling well. You can use a “popular products” list as a way of increasing visibility for your underperforming or new product lines in order to help give them a boost.

You can use a “popular products” list as a way of increasing visibility for your underperforming products or new product lines to help give them a boost.

Here, we’ll show you the best way to identify which products to show as “popular products” on your WooCommerce store. Then we’ll look at different ways you can display them on your online store for maximum impact.

One of the easiest ways to identify which products on your WooCommerce site should be selected as the “popular products” is to analyze which products are selling the best. Fortunately, WooCommerce by default has built-in functionality that lets you do this.

To get started, navigate to WooCommerce → Reports and click on the Sales by product link under the Orders tab.

Find popular products in WooCommerce

Here you can see how well individual products on your WooCommerce site are performing. The Product search tab lets you select specific products from your online store to see how well they are selling. You can also check which products from your WooCommerce site are selling the best using the Top sellers tab.

If you offer free products on your WooCommerce site, you can view which ones are the most popular by checking the Top freebies tab. Additionally, you can also see which products are earning your store the most revenue using the Top earners page.

You can also adjust the period that you want to check the product sales data for. For example, you can only view the product’s performance for the last 7 days, the current month or the previous one, the current year, or define a custom time range yourself.

When selecting popular products from your WooCommerce site, it’s important to monitor and update your list of popular products regularly. This ensures that your product recommendations remain relevant to your audience.

It’s also important to keep up with the ongoing industry trends and seasonal demands to better identify which products are likely to become popular items on your online store. Remember that you don’t necessarily need to display your best-selling products as “popular products” on your WooCommerce site. Instead, it’s better to display underperforming products or new product lines to give their sales a boost.

One of the easiest ways to display a list of popular products on your WooCommerce site is by using shortcodes, and here are the benefits of using them:

  • Flexible placement. Shortcodes can be used anywhere on your WooCommerce site to display popular products. You can even include them in the sidebar by using WooCommerce’s built-in shortcodes widget.
  • Straightforward setup. You don’t have to install any third-party services to display popular products on the front-end. You can use built-in WooCommerce shortcodes even if you don’t have any coding knowledge for displaying popular products.
  • Fully customizable. You can use different shortcodes to display different product lists on different pages of your store, creating a more tailored experience for your customers.

To start displaying your popular products using shortcodes, you will first need to identify the shortcode you want to use. Here are two of the most commonly used shortcodes:

[products limit="3" columns="3" skus="xxx, yyy, zzz"]

This shortcode lets you adjust the number of products you want to display and how many columns you want to show them in.

Popular products shortcode

Replace “xxx, yyy, zzz” with product SKUs and add them to the shortcode to display specific products from your WooCommerce site.

Popular products shortcode preview
[products orderby="popularity" limit="5"]

You can also use this shortcode to display your store’s top five most popular products by sales.

Products orderby shortcode in WooCommerce

You can adjust the limit and add a “column” parameter similar to the other shortcode we created earlier.

Popular products shortcode preview

Now with a better understanding of the shortcode you want to use to showcase popular products, we can start adding the shortcode to any page, post, or widget.

To add a shortcode to any product page, simply use the shortcode in the product’s description at the back-end of your site.

Product short description

You can also display a custom call to action (CTA) message to capture the customer’s attention.

Short description product page

Additionally, you can add the WooCommerce popular products display shortcode to a widget. For this, navigate to Appearance → Widgets and add a new shortcode widget to any part of your WooCommerce site.

Widget shortcode

Paste the shortcode in the text editor and click on the Update button to continue.

WooCommerce popular products in sidebar

This will let you display popular products as widgets anywhere on your WooCommerce site.

Limitations of using shortcodes

While displaying popular products using shortcodes works, there are some potential limitations to using these on your online store:

  • Limited visual display options. While shortcodes work great for displaying popular products, they don’t offer a lot of customization options in terms of how they appear on the front-end.
  • Manual process. Another major disadvantage to using WooCommerce shortcodes is that you have to manually add them to each page of your site. For instance, If you want to add popular products to many different pages, you’ll need to add the shortcode manually each time. This can be time-consuming, especially if you have a large product catalog.

However, the good news is that you can overcome both of these limitations with the help of dedicated plugins that we’ll cover in the following sections.

One of the alternative ways to displaying popular products on your WooCommerce site is by using the WooCommerce Product Table Ultimate plugin, which lets you create fully customizable product tables.

WooCommerce Product Table Ultimate

List products in quick and easy order forms

The intuitive plugin helps store owners overcome the display issues of using shortcodes by giving you more flexibility over how you display your store’s popular products.

Let’s talk about some of the main features of the WooCommerce Product Table Ultimate plugin that make it the perfect option for displaying popular products in WooCommerce:

  • Sortable and filterable product tables. The robust plugin makes it possible to display a wider range of popular products on your online store. The built-in search bars and filters make it easier for customers to find exactly what they’re looking for.
  • Bulk ordering capabilities. You can also include “add all to cart” buttons on product tables created with the plugin. This way, customers can add multiple products to the cart in a single click, making upselling and cross-selling easier than ever.
  • Customizable display options. Since product tables are fully customizable, you can choose which product data you want to display and configure the exact products you want to show in the “popular products” product table.

How to set up a popular products table

The WooCommerce Product Table Ultimate plugin is also very easy to set up on your WooCommerce site, even if you’re not tech-savvy. To get started, get the plugin and install it on your WooCommerce site.

Next, navigate to WooCommerce → Settings → Product Table Ultimate and click on the Licence link from the top.

Enter the license key given to you at the time of purchase and click on the Activate button to continue.

Now that the plugin is installed and activated on your WooCommerce site, it’s time to start configuring your product tables. For this, navigate to WooCommerce → Settings → Product Table Ultimate and click on the General link from the top.

WooCommerce Product Table Ultimate settings

You can specify which columns to show on the product table by default using the Columns field. The Product Source field lets you specify which products you want to display in the product table. You can also choose how variable products appear in product tables using the Variations Display dropdown field.

Additionally, you can select Yes for both the Enable add selected button and Enable add all button dropdown fields. This will display checkboxes next to each product row and let shoppers add multiple products to their cart at once in one click. Once you’re ready, make sure to click on the Save changes button to continue.

Now there are two ways you can display the product table anywhere on your WooCommerce site:

With a shortcode

One of the most simple ways to display a product table anywhere is by using the [product_table_ultimate] shortcode. You can add this shortcode to any page, post, or widget.

Product table shortcode

While the shortcode will display the product table you configured using the plugin’s settings, you can also fine-tune the table using shortcode parameters.

Popular products in a category

Using the block editor

You can add the Product Table Ultimate block to any page or post on your WooCommerce site to display product tables.

Product table block Gutenberg

By default, the table will be displayed according to your table settings but you can override these by configuring the block settings.

Another method for displaying popular products on your online store is with the WooCommerce Order Bump plugin, which allows you to set up modal pop-ups with recommended products at key points in the shopping journey.

The WooCommerce Order Bump plugin offers a one-off solution for displaying popular products in a more visually-appealing way and also makes it easy to recommend popular products to your single product pages, cart page, and checkout page in bulk. This means you can overcome the laborious setup issues of the default WooCommerce shortcode method.

Let’s discuss the WooCommerce Order Bump plugin’s main features that make it an ideal option for store owners looking to display popular products better:

  • Flexible layout options. The WooCommerce Order Bump plugin offers multiple layout options for displaying a modal pop-up with your shop’s popular products. This way, you can display your popular products in a more visually appealing way on the front-end to encourage upsells and cross-sells.
  • Custom discounts. You can also create discounts for popular products displayed in your order bump. Discounts not only help your customers feel more valued but encourage them to add more products to their cart before checking out.
  • Apply order bumps in bulk. Using the plugin you can create order bumps that display for all products in your catalog, specific products, or products that share a specific category or attribute.

This gives you more control over which products are displayed as popular products on your online store.

How to set up a modal pop-up with recommended popular products

Setting up order bumps on your WooCommerce site using the WooCommerce Order Bump plugin is straightforward.

Once you install the plugin, navigate to WooCommerce → Settings → Order Bump and click on the Licence link from the top.

Enter the license key given to you at the time of purchase and click on the Activate button to continue.

Now that the WooCommerce Order Bump plugin is installed and activated on your WooCommerce site, navigate to WooCommerce → Order Bumps and click on the Add New button to get started.

Setting up the order bump

After giving your order bump a title, you can choose which products will trigger the popular products order bump display using the Applies to dropdown menu.

Applies to dropdown menu

For instance, if shoppers add any products from the “Clothing” product category, the most popular products from that specific category will be displayed in a modal popup. You can also specify which products to exclude from triggering the modal popup display such as out-of-stock products.

Using the Bump Content metabox, add a Heading that shoppers will see on the front-end and specify the “popular products” in the Bump Products field.

Bump content

While you can add custom products, you can also use the upsells or cross-sells products that are attached to the products in the customers’ cart. The Layout dropdown field lets you choose the layout of the modal popup and how the bump products appear in them.

In addition to this, you can also select the Display Cart Button and Display Checkbox Button checkboxes to display the cart button and checkboxes. This lets shoppers add multiple products to their cart at once.

Discounts

The Discounts section lets you add either a fixed or percentage-based discount to your order bumps. This is great for encouraging shoppers to make purchases and helps increase the average order value on your online store.

Once you’re ready, make sure to click on the Publish button to continue.

To choose where the popular products display will pop up on the front-end of your WooCommerce site, navigate to WooCommerce → Settings → Order Bump.

Bump location

Using the Bump Location dropdown field, you can display the order bump on either the single product pages, the cart page, or the checkout page. You can also choose what happens next after the customer adds products to their cart using the order bump.

Once you’re ready, make sure to click on the Save changes button to continue.

The Checkbox layout lets customers quickly select more products after they add the primary product they were interested in to their cart.

Checkbox layout

The Product layout lets you display additional quantity selectors and show popular products in a more visually-appealing way.

Product layout

Displaying popular products or listing your top-selling products on your WooCommerce site is a great way to boost sales, increase average order value, enhance product visibility and user experience, and show social proof to customers to increase customer trust.

While you can use WooCommerce default shortcodes to display popular products anywhere on your WooCommerce site, you are limited with design options and it requires a lot of manual labor, especially if you have a large product catalog. This is why it’s best to use dedicated plugins like WooCommerce Product Table Ultimate and WooCommerce Order Bump to improve this functionality.

Improving the user experience of your online store is important for attracting and retaining customers. A great way to provide a seamless and intuitive user experience is by customizing your product pages, especially the way product variations are displayed.

When it comes to displaying product variations, using radio buttons can be a game changer. However, WooCommerce doesn’t let you display product variations as radio buttons by default and, instead, showcases them in generic-looking dropdown menus. Fortunately, this can be easily solved using a plugin.

In this article, we’ll explain the advantages of using radio buttons for displaying product variations and introduce a powerful plugin, WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate, which allows you to display extra options in radio groups as an effective alternative for product variations.

Why use radio buttons for product variations?

There are many reasons why you might want to replace the dropdown menu with radio buttons for product variations, and here are the main ones:

Improved user experience

Radio buttons provide a more intuitive and user-friendly interface for selecting WooCommerce product variations. They allow customers to visually see all available options at a glance, making it easier for them to make selections.

Enhanced visibility

Dropdown menus can sometimes hide the available options, especially if the list is long. Radio buttons, on the other hand, display all variations directly on the product page, increasing their visibility and accessibility.

Quick selection

Radio buttons enable customers to make selections with a single click, without the need to open a dropdown and scroll through the options. This streamlined process can save time and effort for your customers.

Clearer presentation

With radio buttons, it’s easier for customers to compare and evaluate different variations side by side. They can quickly see the available options and make informed decisions based on their preferences.

Mobile-friendly

Radio buttons are particularly well-suited for mobile devices. They offer larger clickable areas compared to dropdown menus, making it easier for users to select their desired variations on smaller screens.

Consistency with other platforms

In addition to all of these reasons, it’s also important to consider that radio buttons are a common UI element used in various eCommerce platforms and websites.

By using radio buttons for variations, you provide a familiar and consistent experience for customers who may be accustomed to this type of interface from other online stores.

Types of radio buttons to consider

If you’re looking to improve the way you display variations on product pages, there are a few options you can consider. Radio buttons are extremely popular for the reasons we outlined above, so we’re going to compare the most common types of radio buttons used across eCommerce stores. We’ll also explore a few other popular options that aren’t available by default, but can be achieved using a WooCommerce plugin:

Standard radio buttons

Standard radio buttons are the traditional radio buttons that consist of small circular buttons and labels. Users can select only one option from the set of buttons and labels.

Standard radio buttons offer a simple and widely recognizable interface for single selection.

Radio buttons with image swatches

Radio buttons with image swatches combine standard radio buttons with visual representation. Instead of a textual label, each option is represented with a large image or thumbnail.

Users can select their desired option by clicking on the corresponding image. Image swatches are commonly used for product attributes like color, texture, or style.

Radio buttons with text swatches

Text swatches can also be used together with radio buttons to create a more visually appealing and intuitive interface for shoppers on your WooCommerce site.

Instead of displaying plain text options, the options are represented as graphical variation swatches or buttons that contain text. These are great for configurable products with attributes such as sizes.

Other relevant option fields for product variations

There are also other great options for displaying product variations in WooCommerce that work as great as radio buttons.

Let’s look at two of the most popular options:

  • Select buttons. Select buttons, also known as dropdown menus or select fields, let users select product options from a list. When customers click on a select button, it displays a list of options in a dropdown menu and lets your shoppers choose a single option. Select buttons are mostly used for cases where space needs to be conserved or when there is a large number of options that need to be displayed neatly.
  • Checkboxes and checkbox groups. Unlike radio buttons that only allow your shoppers to make a single selection, checkboxes let them select multiple options simultaneously. In addition to this, checkbox groups consist of a collection of checkboxes that are related to a specific attribute or feature. This way, your shoppers can select or deselect checkboxes independently which allows them multiple selections within each checkbox group.

Introducing WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate for radio buttons

WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate is a powerful tool that revolutionizes the way you customize WooCommerce products and offer additional options to your customers. It offers a wide range of add-on fields that allow you to offer additional options with your WooCommerce product including radio buttons, checkboxes, select boxes, upload fields, and product fields.

WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate

Personalise products with extra fields and custom options

Find Out More

While the plugin does not directly support traditional product variations, it provides an innovative alternative by enabling you to display extra options using radio buttons and other formats, offering numerous advantages for your online store.

The main advantage of this for store owners is simplified product management. With WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate, you can manage all the extra options in one centralized location, rather than creating and managing individual product variations. This streamlines the product management process, making it easier, and more efficient, for store owners to add, update, or remove extra options across multiple products.

WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate allows you to enhance the visual appeal of radio buttons by presenting them as image swatches or text swatches. This intuitive approach enables customers to make product selections more easily, thereby reducing the likelihood of confusion and cart abandonment.

Use cases for using radio groups with WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate

Here are some use cases where you can use the plugin’s radio button functionality to effectively replace traditional product variations:

Apparel and fashion

  • Size selection: Businesses offering clothing and apparel can use radio buttons to allow customers to select their preferred size, making it easy to browse and choose the right fit.
  • Color options: Radio buttons can be used to showcase available color choices for products like t-shirts, dresses, and shoes, providing a clear and visually appealing selection process.

Personalized products

  • Custom engravings: Companies offering personalized items like jewelry or gifts can utilize radio buttons to enable customers to choose different engravings or messages to be added to the product.
  • Monogram options: For products like bags or accessories, customers can select their preferred monogram style from a range of options using radio buttons.

Food and beverages:

  • Toppings and add-ons: Restaurants or food delivery services can use radio buttons to let customers select toppings or add-ons for their meals, such as extra cheese, veggies, or sauces.
  • Beverage preferences: For coffee shops or beverage sellers, radio buttons can be used to offer various customization options like milk type (regular, soy, almond), sweetener (sugar, honey), or flavor shots.

Electronics and gadgets

  • Storage and memory options: Businesses selling smartphones or laptops can use radio buttons to allow customers to choose different storage capacities or memory options.
  • Accessory selection: Radio buttons can be utilized to present a range of compatible accessories for electronic devices, like phone cases, chargers, or headphones.

Subscription Plans and Services

  • Tiered plans: Businesses offering subscription-based services can use radio buttons to present different plan options with varying features and pricing levels.
  • Payment frequencies: Radio buttons can be used to allow customers to select their preferred payment frequency (monthly, quarterly, annually) for subscription services.

3 ways to add radio buttons and swatches to WooCommerce product variations

Here, we’re going to show you how to offer extra options on products and display them with radio buttons. We’ll also show you how to add image and text swatches as different layout options.

For this, you will need a WordPress site with the WooCommerce plugin activated. On top of this, you’ll also need the WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate plugin for adding radio buttons and swatches to your WooCommerce product variations.

Once you have the WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate plugin installed and activated on your site, you can set up radio buttons and swatches for products in three different ways. Let’s explore the different methods in more detail.

Method 1: Radio groups

The radio groups field lets you add extra options to products. For example, if you sell throw pillows, you can let customers choose which pattern they want to buy using a radio group. In this way, radio groups work as an alternative to product variations.

The best part is that you can add the same radio group to a different throw pillow product, as well. So, if you sell throw pillows in different shapes or sizes, you can add the “Select a pattern” radio group to each one.

Note: Radio groups should be used when you want to let customers select only one option from a list of options. If you want to let customers choose more than one option, you can use the checkbox group field instead.

Here’s what you need to do to create a radio group using the WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate plugin:

Head over to the Product data metabox from the product’s edit screen. Click on the Product Add-Ons tab. Next, click the Add Group button and then the Add Field button. Enter a suitable title for both.

Radio group for pattern

Set the Field type option to Radio Group using the dropdown menu. Click the Add Option button to start adding extra options to the radio group. You can also set a Price for each option if you want to charge extra.

Click the Update button to continue. The product will look something like this on the front-end:

Radio group preview

Method 2: Image swatches

If you want to improve the layout of the single product page and display the products in a more visually-appealing way, you can use the image swatches option.

Using WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate plugin, you can show extra product options with image swatches to give customers a better idea of what they’ll get. Following our example from above, you can display the throw pillow patterns using image swatches.

Here’s how:

Set the Field type option to Image Swatch using the dropdown menu. The options you created will remain in place and an upload image icon will appear next to each one. Click it to add an image for each option.

Pattern field settings

Click the Update button to continue. Preview the product page on the front-end. It will look something like this:

Image swatch preview

Customers can view the throw pillow pattern options in image swatches and click the image swatch to make their selection.

Method 3: Text swatches

Another way to improve the layout of the single product page and better display the different product options is by using text swatches.

The WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate plugin lets you create text swatches that are more user-friendly than plain radio buttons. For example, let’s say you want to offer pillow insert options for your throw pillow products. You can display the different options using clickable text swatches.

Here’s how:

Set the Field type option to Radio Group using the dropdown menu. Next, click the Add Option button and add the extra product options. Same as before, you can use the Price field to charge extra for each product option.

Text swatch

Tick the checkbox next to the Display as Swatch? option. The WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate plugin will display the extra product options in clickable text swatches on the front-end.

Click the Update button to continue. Preview the product page on the front-end. It will look something like this:

Text swatches preview

Customers can view the throw pillow insert options in text swatches and click a swatch to make their selection.

Enhance your product variations with captivating radio swatches

Say goodbye to the ordinary dropdown menus of default WooCommerce functionality and welcome vibrant radio buttons that revolutionize the shopping experience. With the WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate plugin, you can transform your product options into visually stunning radio swatches, creating an effortlessly intuitive interface that delights your customers, especially those on mobile devices.

Embrace this plugin as a powerful alternative to traditional product variations, offering a diverse range of add-on fields, including radio buttons. This exciting feature allows you to showcase product variations in a more visually appealing manner on your product pages. Take it even further by incorporating image swatches and text swatches to make your options truly eye-catching.

Offering product personalization options for your products can help you boost sales and increase the average order value (AOV). In fact, 80% of consumers are more likely to purchase from a brand that offers some sort of personalized experience for their customers.

And while offering product personalization is already an effective strategy, you can get even better results with multi-step products—where customers customize items gradually, unlocking new options as they go. This user-friendly approach avoids overwhelming choices and ensures relevance through conditional logic. Compared to standard personalization, this advanced method creates a smoother experience, boosting conversions and customer satisfaction.

Since WooCommerce’s default product customization options are quite basic and limited, you will have to use a plugin to create multi-step products for your online store.

In this post, we’ll cover the full benefits of multi-step products in WooCommerce and then introduce you to the best plugin for creating them on your ecommerce site, WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate. Finally, we’ll provide a step-by-step guide for creating your first multi-step product!

Introduction to multi-step products

Before we jump into creating multi-step products, it’s important to understand exactly how they work.

Multi-step products are products that let customers configure multiple options to create a bespoke, personalized product. For example, a customizable shoe from Nike lets buyers customize each part of the shoe and create a unique, one-of-one product.

Creating multi-step products on your WooCommerce site helps create a more simplified customization process and shopping experience for your customers. Instead of configuring all aspects of a product at once, they can make choices in a linear fashion, which is far less overwhelming.

Multi-step products can be useful for businesses that offer food deliveries, require users to fill out booking forms, or let customers customize products from the product page. For example, an online pizza shop can let customers select their base crust before displaying the sauce and toppings selection options.

Similarly, online stores that offer customizable apparel products with lots of extra options can divide and display all product customization options into “steps” so it doesn’t overwhelm shoppers.

Benefits of multi-step products

Let’s take a closer look at some of the major benefits of using multi-step products on your WooCommerce site:

  • Increased customer engagement. Multi-step products make the shopping experience on your online store more interactive and enjoyable for customers. As a result, it helps increase customer engagement and satisfaction.
  • Higher conversion rates. With a more simplified and efficient customization process for your WooCommerce products, it makes it easier for customers to make purchases. This can lead to a boost in sales and improve your ecommerce store’s conversion rate.
  • Reduced product returns. Multi-step products allow you to offer a clear and easy-to-use customization process for your WooCommerce products. This can help reduce the number of product returns due to incorrect or unsatisfactory customizations.
  • Increased average order value. Multi-step products offer the best way to display additional premium add-on options or product customization features for ordinary products. This encourages customers to spend more when shopping on your online store and helps increase the average order value.

Choosing the right multi-step configurator plugin

WooCommerce by default only offers basic product customization options when setting up custom products on your online store. You can use the product variations feature to create variable products that let your customers choose pre-made product variations.

While this can work for products that only come in pre-made variants, it doesn’t offer nearly enough options for letting customers personalize their orders.

In order to build a multi-step product configuration process for your WooCommerce site, you will need to use a plugin. Let’s talk about some of the key factors to consider when choosing a multi-step configurator plugin for your WooCommerce site:

  • Wide range of customization options. You want to go for a plugin that lets you offer a wide range of customization options for your WooCommerce products.
  • Easy-to-use, aesthetic display. The product creation process should be simple and easy to use, both for store admins and customers. A solid multi-step product configurator will let you quickly add personalization options and customize them to offer an aesthetic display on the front-end of your site.
  • Straightforward product configuration. Ideally, you want to use a product configurator that makes the product setup process simple and doesn’t require you to code.
  • Compatibility with your other plugins and themes. For multi-step products to look good on the front-end, you want to make sure the plugin of your choice is fully compatible with your theme settings and other important plugins.
  • Competitive pricing. You want to choose a solid multi-product configurator that offers a wide range of features at a competitive price.

The WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate plugin also lets you add other products in your add-on fields so it’s easier to configure product bundles, offer gift boxes, and display product upsells or cross-sells on the same product page.

You can also use color and image swatches to create a more immersive product configuration experience for your customers on the front-end. This way, shoppers know exactly what they’re purchasing, and makes it easier to visually differentiate between multiple product customization options.

In addition to all of these great features, WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate also lets you organize extra options or fields into groups. This can help streamline the customization process for your customers and encourage them to complete their purchases.

WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate offers a basic plan, but to unlock the full potential of the plugin and the full feature set, you’ll want to opt for the Pro version. One of the major advantages of getting the Pro version for multi-step products is that you have more layouts that you can apply to groups.

Let’s take a look at some of the field group layouts you can get with the Pro version of WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate:

Accordion

Accordion

The accordion layout lets you display field groups into dropdown fields. This way, shoppers can “open” or click on the dropdown field they want to make customizations to first.

Steps

The steps layout is a great way to divide and split up the customization process for your products into multiple steps.

Customers can move on to the next step by clicking on the “Next step” button once they’re ready to make the next set of customizations.

The Tabs layout makes lets you display multiple field groups or product steps in separate tabs or sections.

Setting up multi-step products with WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate

In this tutorial, we’ll show you how to set up multi-step products with the WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate plugin.

For this, you will need a WordPress site with the WooCommerce plugin installed along with some products added to your site. You’ll also need WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate to set up customization options for your products and display them dynamically on the front-end of your online store.

Step #1: Download and Install the plugin

Once you get the WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate plugin, navigate to Plugins → Add New and upload the plugin’s ZIP file.

Click on the Install Now button and then Activate this plugin to continue. Once the plugin is installed and enabled, navigate to WooCommerce → Settings → Product Add-Ons and click on the Licence link from the top.

Enter the license key given to you at the time of purchase and click on the Activate this license button to continue.

Step #2: Setup a multi-step product

Navigate to the Products page from the WordPress admin panel to select any product you want to customize or create a new product by clicking on the Add New button.

Create WooCommerce product

After setting up basic product details, click on the Product Add-Ons tab under the Product data metabox to add extra options.

Add group

Click on the Add Group button to create a group of fields or a “step” for customizing your product. For instance, if you want to offer customization for your apparel products in three different steps such as “Design, Size, and Shipping Options”, you will have to set up three groups with relevant fields.

Now click on the Add Field button to start adding fields to each “step” or group that you want to add for your customizable product.

After giving your field a title, select the type of extra option you want to showcase for your product using the Field Type dropdown menu. For example, if you want to display specific design options, you can display them in image swatches or display a color selector to let users choose a color.

Design field

Depending on the field type you choose, you can click on the Add Option button to add specific choices for each field. You can even add individual prices for specific design options and display images so it’s easier for shoppers to make decisions. Similarly, you can also display a file upload field to let customers upload a graphic or logo on the t-shirt for an extra charge.

Size options

You can add as many fields to each group created for the product, and make fields Required, if you’d like. For example, customers must select the design of their choice as well as the size before they proceed to the checkout page. For this, you can select the Required Field? checkbox option when adding field values or options.

Once you’re done adding various fields and setting up multiple field groups or “steps” for a multi-step product, you can click on the Update button to save changes.

Single page customization

At this stage, the plugin will display all field groups on the same page at once. However, you can set up conditional logic rules to display the next “steps” or field groups once customers are done selecting customization options from the previous step.

In addition to this, the WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate plugin also lets you display fields and groups in various layouts.

Display group as

Using the Display groups as dropdown field, you can pick from multiple layout types including Accordion, Lightbox, Steps, as well as Tabs. Ideally, you want to choose the one that best suits your product and the extra options it offers.

Step #3: Add conditional logic rules

To set up conditional logic rules for your multi-step product, click on the Add Condition button to get started.

Conditional logic

This will let you display or hide fields based on certain values such as the choices consumers make in the “Design” step or the “Size” step. For a multi-step product, you want to hide the next step until the customer has made a selection in the previous step.

Conditional logic rules for multi-step product WooCommerce

For instance, we can leave the first step as is and add a condition to the second step. We can set up the conditional logic rule in a way that only displays the field group or the set of fields in a “sep” when a customer makes a selection from the previous fields.

Conditional rules

Similarly, you can create a conditional logic rule to display the last step once customers are finished with the first two. This makes it easier for WooCommerce store owners to create multiple product creation paths all within a single product page. In addition to this, you can also apply conditional logic rules to specific fields within your field groups or steps.

For a better understanding of the powerful functionality of the plugin, you can go over the documentation on conditions.

Step #4: Preview

Preview design options

Now when customers first land on the multi-step product’s single product page, they will have to first make their selections to view the other customizable options.

Select design multi-step product WooCommerce

This helps create a more refined shopping experience and makes it easier for shoppers to make informed purchase decisions without getting overwhelmed with a lot of customization options.

Multi-step product WooCommerce all options

Boost customer satisfaction with multi-step products

Setting up multi-step products on your WooCommerce site is a great way to encourage sales and improve the user experience. It also helps reduce the number of order returns on your online store due to incorrect customizations and increases average customer spend.

While default WooCommerce doesn’t let you create multi-step products, you can use a dedicated plugin like WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate to do so. This robust plugin is the best solution for setting up multi-step products on your online store due to its wide range of customization features, ease of use, compatibility with other plugins, and competitive pricing.

Setting the right pricing structure is essential for any online store. While WooCommerce provides a robust platform for managing products and their prices, one major limitation is the absence of built-in functionality for setting prices per unit. This means you cannot specify the quantity that a unit represents for your WooCommerce products, which can be crucial for certain products such as grocery items, fabrics, building materials, art prints, and other complex products.

In this article, we will explore the significance of setting per-unit pricing in WooCommerce and how it can benefit both store owners and customers. We’ll also show you how to set a price per unit using a plugin called WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate.

Why should you set per-unit pricing in WooCommerce?

Setting per-unit pricing in WooCommerce can provide several benefits for both the store owner and customers. Here are two main reasons why you’d want to customize your store to include this functionality:

#1: Accurate representation of quantity

When you specify the quantity that a unit represents, it helps customers understand exactly what they are purchasing. For instance, if you sell oranges, you can specify that 1 unit equals 1 kg without including it in the product name. This allows customers to know the quantity they are getting and make informed purchasing decisions. Similarly, if you sell paint in cans of 5L, customers will know how many cans they need to buy to cover their required area accurately.

#2: Custom quantities and measurements

In certain cases, customers may need to purchase products in custom quantities based on their specific requirements. For example, when selling wallpaper, customers need to calculate the height and width of their walls to determine the correct square meterage (sqm) they need to order. By allowing customers to input their measurements, you can automatically calculate the correct quantity for them. In such scenarios, displaying unit quantities becomes crucial as you want to make it clear to customers that they should input their measurements in centimeters, meters, inches, or any other relevant unit.

Setting a price per unit with WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate

WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate is a powerful plugin that takes your product customization capabilities to the next level. This plugin allows you to add additional options, fields, or customization choices to your products, providing increased flexibility for your customers when making a purchase. With this plugin, you can tailor your products to meet the unique needs and preferences of your customers, offering a more personalized shopping experience.

One of the key features of WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate is its ability to incorporate advanced functionality into your product options. The plugin comes with a wide range of add-on fields such as checkboxes, radio buttons, select boxes, file upload fields, and text fields. It also includes advanced functionality such as conditional logic, pricing adjustments based on selected add-ons, and the ability to assign different add-ons to specific product variations. All these features allow you to create dynamic and interactive product options that adapt to your customers’ selections, making their shopping experience more engaging and tailored to their specific needs.

While there are a number of ways you can use the WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate plugin to customize your online store’s products, in this article we’re primarily going to focus on two features that are relevant to per-unit pricing. These are:

  • Price labels, which let you display the price per unit on a product page
  • Calculation fields, which are available in the pro version of the plugin and allow customers to purchase custom quantities of a product.

In this article, we will explore how you can effectively combine these two powerful features to create a robust pricing system. By leveraging per-unit pricing and product customization capabilities, you will enable customers to purchase products in a custom number of units tailored to their specific needs. First, let’s look at these features individually.

Adding price labels to WooCommerce products

Price labels let you choose how to display the product price on the front-end. This is particularly useful if you want to specify the price of the base unit.

With this plugin, you can add price labels as a prefix or suffix to the product price. For example, if you sell fabric, you might set the price label to something like £5.95 per metre. By adding this information as a price label, customers will immediately know how much a single unit costs and can make accurate purchasing decisions based on their needs. This ensures transparency and avoids any confusion regarding the pricing and quantity relationship.

Fabric product

WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate offers the option to set the price label to change when the price changes. This means that when customers select different options or add-ons that have an associated cost, the main price will automatically update to reflect the changes. For example, if you sell wallpaper with additional options (like adhesive or a decorating kit) that you want to charge extra for, the price label will dynamically update as the customer selects different add-ons to include with their order. This feature provides real-time pricing information, giving customers a clear understanding of how their choices impact the final cost.

Wallpaper roll product

There are three ways to add a price label to products using WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate; two of these are ideal for setting price labels globally and one option is intended for setting price labels on individual products. Let’s look at each of these methods below:

Method #1: Set a global price label in the plugin settings

For this method, go to WooCommerce > Settings > WooCommerce Product Add Ons Ultimate. In the General tab, scroll down until you find the ‘Labels’ heading. You’ll then have options to add a global price label, and choose whether to display it before the price, after the price, or to hide the price entirely and simply replace it with the price label itself.

Scroll up to the General tab, and you’ll see you can also choose to update the price label as the price changes. Note that this is the only way to select this option, so if you add price labels using the other two methods we’ve listed below, you’ll still need to access the plugin settings if you want the price label to update with the price.

Setting a global price label in the plugin settings

Method #2: Set a global price label in the Customizer

From your WP admin dashboard, go to Appearance > Customize. This will open the Customizer and there will be a tab for Product Add-Ons Ultimate. Click the ‘General’ tab and you’ll immediately see the same options discussed above for setting a global price label and choosing where to display it.

Setting a global price label with the Customizer

Method #3: Setting a price label on individual products

If you sell a wide range of products in your store, this is the option you’ll likely be most interested in. In the backend, go to Products, and open the product data for the product you want to add a price label to. In the general tab, you’ll see an option for adding a price label and indicating where you’d like to display it.

Adding a price label to products individually

Introduction to calculation fields

Using WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate’s “calculation” fields, you can allow customers to input a custom quantity of a product that they want to order, usually based on two or more parameters (for example, height and length), and the plugin will calculate the total price of the order.

Let’s take a look at how you can set up calculation fields on your WooCommerce site using the WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate plugin. To get started, create a new product by navigating to Products → Add New and start creating all fields that require customer input.

For instance, if you’re selling printing services, you can create fields that let your customers select how many pages and the paper size they need. You might set up the Paper Size field like this:

Paper size

And the Number of Pages field, like this:

Number of pages field

Next, create a new Calculation field to start setting up the formula. The formula we need to create should work with standard mathematical operations and tags. Each tag will represent a numerical value, including the values entered by customers, the base price of the product, or charges incurred for selecting a custom add-on.

Calculation field

The calculation field

You can calculate the total cost of the print by multiplying the size option selected (i.e. {field_673_field_option}) with the total number of pages a user selects (i.e. {field_674}) and adding the basic product price to it. This means the formula will be: “({field_673_field_option} * {field_674}) + {product_price}”.

Printing services

This way, when customers enter the required values, the product price will update accordingly.

The WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate plugin also gives you additional control over the final price of your WooCommerce products. This way, you can also choose to offer a discount on certain quantities, round up the final price, and remove decimal points from the final price.

Calculation fields also work well with conditional logic so you can trigger other add-on fields when customers specify a certain amount.

Free gift fields

For instance, if a customer purchases at least 250 pages, you can trigger a selection of free gifts for customers to choose from. You can use conditional logic rules to hide the free gift selection fields until the value of the number of pages exceeds a specified amount.

Free gift

Customers who don’t meet the conditional logic rules will not see the “Free gifts” additional field on the front end of your WooCommerce site.

How to set a price per unit with WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate

In this tutorial, we’re going to cover the steps required to set per-unit pricing using the WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate plugin. In this example, we’re going to showcase how to combine price labels and calculation fields to sell wallpaper. This is a slightly complex product since customers will need to calculate the total square meters that they need.

This starts by going to the Wallpaper product data, opening Product Add-Ons, ad creating a group that enables customers to input the length and height of their wall. You would need a separate field for length, and a separate field for height.

Dimension fields

You will first have to set up basic add-on fields that let customers select custom wallpaper sizes. Next, you can use the Number field type to let shoppers enter custom values or sizes they require.

Wallpaper price label

You can use the price labels feature to display pricing in different ways like “$0.5 per sqm” or “$0.2 per sqft”.

It’s also important to give customers an easy way to calculate the amount of wallpaper they need so they don’t end up ordering extra. For this, you will need to set up a calculation field with a formula that multiplies the length and width field values and calculates the total area.

Wallpaper calculation field

For example, for multiplying both fields together, we’ve used the “{field_706} * {field_707}” formula. Make sure to set the Action field to Update Quantity to automatically calculate the final price of the product based on the total area of wallpaper the customer needs.

Wallpaper calculation field preview

Once shoppers enter the measurements, the total amount of wallpaper they need will be displayed and the accurate product quantity will be automatically selected.

To get ideas on how to set per-unit pricing strategies on other kinds of products, you can head over to the demo site to see the WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate plugin in action.

Price per unit strategies to try with your WooCommerce products

While many customers on your online store will often just buy the quantity they need – especially for products like wallpaper which are determined by the fixed space they have available – there are some strategies you can use to encourage customers to increase the number of units they buy or add on to their order.

Let’s take a look at some of the per-unit strategies you can try out with your WooCommerce products using the WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate plugin.

Leverage the power of conditional logic

You can use the power of conditional logic in a number of ways to trigger extra options depending on the quantity selected by the customer.

Belt free gift

For instance, if a customer purchases more than 10 pairs of socks, they can select a free gift with their order. It’s a great way to encourage shoppers to add more items to their carts and proceed to the checkout page so they can receive a free gift with their order.

Add discounts on higher quantities

You can use price-per-unit strategies for different products such as “Nuts and Bolts” that require you to push more quantity in order for it to be profitable.

Nuts and bolts example

You can offer your customers the option to purchase more units or amounts by displaying a promotional message instead of the price label.

Nuts and bolts free gift

As a result, it encourages shoppers to add more units of a product to their shopping cart before checking out from your online store.

Set minimum quantities

Store owners might also need to sell products with a minimum amount to make the orders feasible. The easiest way to do this is by using the WooCommerce Minimum Maximum Quantity and Order plugin.

Minimum quantity

It lets you set the minimum order quantity from the back-end for specific products, products in a specific category, or all products. You can also set minimum quantities for products by user role.

Minimum quantity

This way, the minimum units of a product store owners specify will be the lowest amount of items shoppers can add to their shopping carts from the front-end. If a customer enters a quantity that’s below the minimum quantity specified, they’ll see an error message:

Minimum quantity error message

Offer your customers more flexibility with per-unit pricing

When setting up your online store using the WooCommerce plugin, one limitation you may encounter is the inability to easily implement price-per-unit strategies for your products. However, incorporating price-per-unit pricing is often crucial for store owners as it provides greater clarity to shoppers regarding the quantity of a product they are purchasing. In addition to this, it also makes it easier to set up a pricing system based on custom quantities selected by your customers. As a result, it helps increase sales and offers better product management for store owners.

The most straightforward way to implement price-per-unit strategies for all kinds of WooCommerce products is with the WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate plugin on your WordPress site. In this article, we’ve seen how you can combine two of the plugin’s features, price labels and calculation fields, to create a pricing strategy that clearly showcases the value of each unit, and drives customers to order a custom number of units based on their needs.

The post How to offer “You May Also Like” upsells in WooCommerce appeared first on Plugin Republic.

]]>
The WooCommerce “You may also like” section is one of the primary ways to offer product upsells and cross-sells on your online store using the platform’s default functionality.

While WooCommerce’s default functionality for displaying product recommendations is a good starting point, it has its limitations. For you to get the most out of this feature, you’ll need a supplementary plugin.

In this post, we’ll show you how to set up the “You may also like” product recommendations section in WooCommerce and then demonstrate how you can get more out of your product upsells and cross-sells with the help of the WooCommerce Order Bump plugin.

Introduction to product recommendations in WooCommerce

The default product recommendation feature in WooCommerce works by offering your customers similar or related products when they visit a product page or add products to their shopping cart. This is a great way to boost sales and increase the average order value of your online store.

In a nutshell, the role of the “You may also like” section in WooCommerce is to showcase recommended products, upsells, and cross-sells to shoppers, and encourage them to add more products to their carts.

Different types of product recommendations

There are three main types of product recommendations available by default in WooCommerce:

Upsells

An upsell is when customers are offered an upgrade to the product they are already interested in.

For instance, if a customer is interested in purchasing a normal hoodie, you can show them a more premium hoodie with a logo that costs more as an upgrade option.

An upsell can also be a more advanced model of the same product or an add-on upgrade to the product itself.

Cross-sells

Cross-sells are supplementary products that you can offer to shoppers based on the product they’re already interested in. They’re products that go along well with the primary product your customer wants to purchase.

For example, customers who are interested in purchasing dress shoes might be inclined to add a shoe cream or a polishing brush to their order. Similarly, for a laptop product, you can offer a laptop bag as a cross-sell product.

Related products can be upsells or cross-sells but are not necessarily either. Sometimes these products might even be down-sells or lower-priced products than the primary product the buyer is interested in.

For example, you can show customers similar products or products that share the same category or tags as the ones they’re viewing.

Benefits of product recommendations

Let’s talk about some of the major benefits of offering product recommendations on your WooCommerce site:

  • Increased average order value. Recommended products work wonders when it comes to encouraging your customers to spend more money either on more expensive product options, add-ons, or supplementary products.
  • Improved customer experience. Since product recommendations are displayed based on the product your customer is already interested in, it helps them find the products they are looking for more easily without having to scroll through your entire product catalog.
  • Easier product discovery. You can improve product visibility on your WooCommerce site by showing product recommendations, particularly for newer or underperforming product lines. You can give such products a boost by showcasing them on the product pages of your most popular lines.

Setting up “You may also like” recommendations in WooCommerce

WooCommerce will show one type of product recommendation – related products – by default. These appear on your product pages, and the specific products shown are taken from the same category as the primary product.

The problem with this is that WooCommerce automatically selects the related products, so you don’t have any control over which products are recommended to your shoppers. If you want to highlight specific products, such as underperforming ones as we mentioned above, you can’t do this. Additionally, there may be the risk that the recommended product is not an exact match to the product it’s being paired with.

Nonetheless, it’s important that you know how to step up “You may also like” recommendations as a WooCommerce store owner, so let’s show you how to do this.

To get started, navigate to Products → All Products from the WordPress admin panel and select the product you want to set up “You may also like” recommendations for.

Hoodie with Logo upsells

Click on the Linked Products tab under the Product data metabox to view the Upsells and Cross-sells fields. Click on the Update button once you’re done.

You may also like section

The products you add to the Upsells field will appear on the single product page under the “You may also like…” heading.

Cross-sells

Products added to the Cross-sells field will appear on the WooCommerce cart page under the “You may be interested in” heading if customers have the primary product in their shopping cart.

Using plugins to enhance WooCommerce product recommendations

We’ve seen how to set up product recommendations manually in your store, so now let’s look at how you can enhance this functionality with plugins, and why it’s so important to do so.

We’ve already looked at one major limitation with product recommendations in WooCommerce, which is that you can’t select which specific products to recommend on product pages. Additionally, you can’t prioritize specific products to be displayed in the “You may also like” section, by which we mean that there’s no way for you to select the frequency at which certain products are recommended. It’s all automated and randomized, based on which products are from the same category.

Another limitation is that you have to navigate to each product’s edit page to set up product recommendations. This makes it a very time-consuming process, especially if you have a large product catalog.

To maximize the impact of your “You may also like” recommendations, you’ll want to use a plugin like WooCommerce Order Bump. It’s the perfect option for customizing and displaying the “You may also like” recommendations on your WooCommerce site. You can display any product from your entire store’s catalog in an automatic modal pop-up to encourage upsells and cross-sells.

Additionally, the automatic modal popup is fully customizable which means you can create a layout that resonates well with your brand’s unique aesthetics. On top of encouraging more sales, you also improve the customer experience of your online store by displaying relevant product recommendations in strategic locations.

The WooCommerce Order Bump plugin also comes pre-built with discount functionality. This way, you can offer discounts on recommended products to encourage more shoppers to add them to their cart and shift underperforming products on your WooCommerce site.

Getting started with WooCommerce Order Bump

Here, we’ll show you how you can get started with WooCommerce Order Bump and use the plugin to set up “You may also like” recommendations on your online store.

For this, you’ll need the WooCommerce plugin installed and activated on your WordPress site along with some products. You’ll also need the WooCommerce Order Bump plugin to set up the modal pop-up with product recommendations.

Enter the license key given to you at the time of purchase and click on the Activate this license button to continue.

Step #2: Create a new order bump

Now that the WooCommerce Order Bump is fully integrated with your WooCommerce site, we can start creating an order bump for “You may also like” product recommendations. For this, navigate to WooCommerce → Order Bumps and then click on the Add New button.

Select products

After giving your order bump a title like “You may also like”, select the primary product you want to display product recommendations for using the Bump Applies To metabox.

Bump applies to settings

The Applies to dropdown menu lets you specify whether you want to display the modal popup for all products, specific categories, specific attributes, or specific products on your WooCommerce site. You can even choose to exclude specific products from the product recommendation order bump using the Excluded Product field. The Roles field lets you specify user roles that will see the order bump on the front-end of your WooCommerce site.

Bump content

Once you’ve chosen the primary products that will trigger the “You may also like” product recommendations popup, it’s time to start selecting the products you want to promote or showcase in the order bump using the Bump Content metabox

Set headings and choose a layout

The Heading field lets you display a custom message or a call to action (CTA) that may encourage shoppers to add more products to their cart before checking out.

Headings and CTA

You can add the products that will appear on the order bump using the Bump Products field. In addition to this, you can also select the Use Upsell Products or the Use Cross Sell Products checkboxes if you want to use the upsell or cross-sell products attached to products in the customer’s cart.

The plugin also lets you choose a layout for how promotional products will be displayed in the order bump using the Layout dropdown field. The Product option lets you showcase product images along with product price and title while the Checkbox option will showcase select boxes with product titles and prices. You can also choose whether to display a quantity field, a cart button, as well as a checkout button directly on the order bump itself. This can help add to the overall user experience on your online store and makes it easier for shoppers to take quick action.

Apply discounts (optional)

Lastly, the Discounts metabox lets you add a pricing discount promotion to the products that appear in the order bump.

Apply discount

Offering fixed or percentage-based discounts to shoppers can encourage more sales and boost the AOV of your online store. You can also change the Heading field in the Bump Content section to better suit your discount offering and make it easier to inform your customers about ongoing deals.

Once you’re done, click on the Publish button to continue.

Step #3: Choose where the “You may also like” pop-up appears

With the “You may also like” product recommendation pop-up published, navigate to WooCommerce → Settings → Order Bump to choose where the order bump will appear on your WooCommerce site for customers when they add the primary product to their shopping cart.

Bump location

The Bump Location dropdown menu lets you either display the order bump on the cart page, single product pages, or the checkout page.

You can also decide what happens after your shoppers successfully add products to their cart using the “You may also like” pop-up using the After Add to Cart dropdown menu. Once you’re ready, make sure to click on the Save changes button to continue.

Step #4: Preview

Once customers add the primary product or the products specified in the Bump Applies To section, the “You may also like” product recommendation pop-up will automatically be displayed to them.

Boost your sales with WooCommerce Order Bump

Offering product recommendations on your online store encourages shoppers to spend more money on product upgrades, product add-ons, or supplementary products that go alongside their orders. It also helps promote your store’s underperforming products and improves the user experience by making it easier for your customers to find products that are relevant to them quickly, without having to search for them through your store’s entire product catalog.

While WooCommerce by default has functionality for displaying product recommendations, it doesn’t quite cut it. You have to manually add upsells and cross-sells to each product which can be time-consuming. On top of this, there’s no option to choose specific products to be displayed as recommended products on your single product pages.

To get the most out of product recommendations, you’ll need a dedicated plugin like the WooCommerce Order Bump plugin.

WooCommerce Order Bump lets you create a customizable modal popup that’s automatically shown to customers when they add products to their cart. This way, you have full control over which products appear in the “You may also like” section of your WooCommerce site.
