Initially I couldn’t get this to work, until I noticed that initialization string called the class gallery-item a – whereas my gallery had the class .blocks-gallery-item a. Once I changed the class it worked like a charm.

I’m guessing this is the difference between the 2016 version of Wordpress and the 2019 version (go figure right?) – that being said, it still works with that one change – and – I’m extremely grateful for this write up.
