You’ve got ‘cash on delivery’ as a payment option in your store, but you want to add an extra charge to customers who pay using this method. However, when you get to the settings, you see that there’s no way to add a WooCommerce cash on delivery extra fee without a plugin.

In this article, you’ll learn how to set up a WooCommerce cash on delivery fee in two easy steps. It’ll take you less than five minutes.

We’ll also look at some optional extras, like setting minimum or maximum order values for when the fee applies, whether to include shipping costs, and whether to apply tax.

What is cash on delivery in WooCommerce

Just as the name suggest, cash on delivery is a payment method in online stores where the customer pays on receiving their product instead of in advance. Even though it’s not as popular nowadays as it was before, thanks to more advanced online payment options, it’s still a requirement for every eCommerce website to include it.

Some customers prefer not to disclose credit or debit card information online, which makes cash on delivery (COD) an essential part of any business that doesn’t want to lose potential clients.

Another reason why you would want to include this method is if you offer customized products and you want to let the customer see whether everything is done per their requirements before committing to payment.

In the end, including cash on delivery can only enrich the user experience by giving them more control over how they purchase products online.

Why you need to set up WooCommerce cash on delivery fee

There are probably thousands of reasons you might want to charge extra for cash on delivery in your WooCommerce store. Here are the top three:

  • It requires additional resources for you to be serving online customers in person.
  • You might find that customers who purchase using this method aren’t always there when you deliver – meaning that you need to spend extra time returning products to stock and cancelling orders.
  • If your products are perishable, like food items, orders that don’t get delivered can lead to wastage.

In an ideal world, you’d get the payment upfront and online – but this might not be practical.

How much extra should you charge?

This will depend on your store and your products. The only person who can really know the answer to this question is you.

However, there are a couple of things to keep in mind:

  • Don’t make the extra charge too high as it might lose you some sales.
  • Apply the extra fee as a fixed amount or a percentage of the total order cost.
  • Consider removing the fee for site members if you have a user role pricing feature to your website.

You can also remove or lower the cash on delivery fee if the person has ordered above a certain amount and you have tiered pricing enabled.

How to enable a WooCommerce cash on delivery fee – 2 easy steps

To add your WooCommerce cash on delivery fee, you’ll need a copy of the WooCommerce Fees and Discounts plugin. With this plugin installed you’ll be able to add the fee within a couple of minutes.

Choose what kind of fee (or discount) you want apply. This can be a fixed amount or a percentage.

Amount

Enter the amount of the fee. If you chose percentage for the fee type, then the value you enter here will be the percentage.

Include shipping costs

If you want to include the shipping costs in the overall order, then check this option.

Minimum and maximum amounts

Maybe you only want to add a cash on delivery fee for orders under or over a certain value. Enter the amounts here.

Apply tax

Select the ‘Apply tax’ option to add tax to the cash on delivery fee. You can choose the tax class from the field below.

Seeing the cash on delivery fee at checkout

Now, when the customer chooses the cash on delivery fee at checkout, they’ll see an extra charge.

What happens if the customer changes their payment method?

If the user changes their payment gateway then the charge will automatically be removed, and the checkout fields will update.

Apply a discount to cash on delivery payments in WooCommerce

Of course, adding a fee to your cash on delivery payments might be the opposite of what you want to do. Perhaps, you want to offer the customer a discount for paying this way.

If so, then all you need to do is set the ‘Type’ field to a fixed or percentage discount. Then users will get money off their order if they choose cash on delivery.

Further payment gateway based fees and discounts

That’s it – two easy steps for creating your WooCommerce cash on delivery fee. If you’d like more ideas on payment gateway based fees and discounts, take a look at this article.

The complete guide to WooCommerce variable products

Here’s an overview of what we’re covering in this article. Just click on the heading to jump straight to the section.

WooCommerce variable product example and definition

A variable product is a product type in WooCommerce that allows the product to be divided into different variations that a customer can choose from. A typical example would be a shirt which is available in different sizes and different colors. The customer doesn’t just choose ‘Shirt’; they choose the medium shirt in red.

WooCommerce has several other product ‘types’. These include:

  • Simple: This is the basic product type, and for many people, it’s all they will ever need. Simple products are usually physical objects, i.e. you’ll need to ship them, and they don’t have any options. A typical example would be a book.
  • Grouped: This is a more complex product type, which combines related products into a single ‘grouped’ product.
  • Virtual: A virtual product doesn’t need shipping. It could be something abstract, like a service.
  • Downloadable: Again, not a physical product. A typical example would be a plugin.

Some of these ‘types’ are very similar to each other, and many people wonder what the difference is between a grouped product and a variable product. To explain that, we’ll continue with our shirt example from above – that’s a variable product.

A grouped product, however, would be a whole outfit – the shirt, the pants, the shoes, etc. They can be grouped together for many reasons – they come from the same line, or they are often bought together.

What is the difference between a variable product and a variation?

So having cleared up what a variable product is, we now need to understand what a variation is. And to understand what a variation is, we need to know what an attribute is.

What is a WooCommerce attribute?

Attributes are ways of grouping products. You can create an attribute like ‘Size’ and then configure terms under the attribute, like ‘Small’, ‘Medium’, and ‘Large’, in order to display them in the product table.

In the example of the shirt above, we might have our product, the Shirt, which is available in the following sizes: ‘Small’, ‘Medium’, and ‘Large’. In this case, the attribute is ‘Size’.

Continuing with our shirt example, we have variations according to the ‘Size’ attribute. We create our product, Shirt, then assign it the ‘Size’ attribute. Finally, we create variations for the product according to the attribute terms. These are our variations: ‘Small’, ‘Medium’, and ‘Large’.

It starts to get more complex if we have more than one attribute assigned to a product. Continuing the shirt example, we could assign an additional color variation and now, our shirt is available in all sizes and all colors. This leaves us with a lot of combinations, :

  • Small, Red.
  • Small, Blue.
  • Small, Green.
  • Medium, Red.
  • Medium, Blue.
  • Medium, Green.
  • Large, Red.
  • Large, Blue.
  • Large, Green.

All these combinations are separate variations of the product. Yikes.

Why use variable products in WooCommerce?

Although it can potentially feel confusing to have so many combinations of your product, it’s really useful to be able to manage these as variations. With a simple product that doesn’t have any variations, you can manage stock, price, and SKU, at the product level.

With variable products, however, you can manage data for each individual variation. This means that you can track inventory for your small, red shirts separately from your large, green shirts and make the according changes when a variation is out of stock.

In total, you can manage the following data for each variation of your product:

  • Product image
  • SKU
  • Enabled
  • Downloadable
  • Virtual
  • Manage stock – toggle this on or off to manage stock for the individual variation
  • Regular price
  • Sale price
  • Stock status
  • Stock quantity
  • Allow backorders
  • Weight
  • Dimensions
  • Shipping class
  • Tax class
  • Description

What is the difference between variations and attributes?

Hopefully, I’ve answered this question above. But just to clarify: an attribute is a way of defining information about a product – like Size; variations are the specific instances of an attribute – like Small, Medium, Large.

You can think about it another way. Take a look at the screenshot of a product page below.

WooCommerce variable product with two attributes

The attribute is the label for the dropdown field: i.e. ‘Size’; the variations are the options inside the dropdown field: i.e. ‘Small’, ‘Medium’, ‘Large’.

Creating your first variable product: A step-by-step guide

Now, armed with all this knowledge, we can look at how to add product variables in WooCommerce.

Step 1: Create your attribute and its terms

We saw above that for each variable product, we must have at least one attribute. So before creating your product, you need to create your attributes.

Create the attribute

  1. Go to WooCommerce > Attributes
  2. In the ‘Add new attribute’ form on the left, just enter the name of your attribute in the ‘Name’ field (e.g. ‘Size’)
  3. Click ‘Add attribute’

Your attribute has been created and you can see it listed in the table on the right.

Add the attribute terms

  1. Click ‘Configure terms’ in the ‘Terms’ column of your attribute
  2. In the ‘Add new…’ form on the left, enter the name of your first term (e.g. ‘Small’)
  3. Click ‘Add new…’
  4. Repeat for each term

When you’ve finished, your table of terms will look something like this:

WooCommerce variable product – attribute terms

Step 2: Create a WooCommerce variable product

With your attributes ready, you can create your variable product.

Create a new product

  1. Go to Products > Add New
  2. Enter your product title and any other information you like
  3. Now you can set the ‘Product Type’ field in the ‘Product Data’ tab to ‘Variable product’
WooCommerce variable product settings – tax status and class

For more detail on adding products in WooCommerce, check out this tutorial.

Step 3: Add your attributes to your variable product

Now it’s time to define which attribute(s) you want to use in your variable product.

Add an attribute

  1. Click the ‘Attributes’ tab in the ‘Product Data’ section
  2. In the ‘Custom product attribute’ dropdown, select the name of your attribute
  3. Click ‘Add’
WooCommerce – setting new attributes

Define the attribute terms to use

  1. Assuming you want to use all the terms you’ve defined for your attribute, click the ‘Select all’ button
  2. Select the ‘Use for variations’ option
  3. Click ‘Save attributes’
WooCommerce – defining attribute terms of variable product

Step 4: Add your variations

Now your attributes have been added to your product, you can define your variations. In this example, we’ll add variations for all our attributes.

  1. Click the ‘Variations’ tab in the ‘Product Data’ section
  2. Select ‘Create variations from all attributes’
  3. Click ‘Go’
WooCommerce – creating variations from attributes

WooCommerce will add a product variation for each attribute.

WooCommerce product variations

You can see each variation listed.

Step 5: Editing your variations

You can edit variations individually or in bulk.

Edit individual variations

To edit an individual variation:

  1. Click on the variation to expand its panel
  2. Edit the required parameters
  3. Click ‘Save changes’
WooCommerce – setting variation parameters for variable products

You can see from the screenshot above all the parameters that you can edit for each variation.

Bulk editing variations

It’s highly likely that you’ll want to edit certain, if not all, parameters for your variations in one hit. For example, the price for each variation might not vary so you want to be able to set the price for all variations in one action.

To edit all variations in one go:

  1. Click the ‘Add variation’ select field
  2. You’ll see a long list of possible actions – select the one you want
  3. Click ‘Go’
Bulk editing WooCommerce variations

Depending on the action you’ve chosen, you’ll get an additional pop-up box to enter a value. And if you want to see how you can create a bulk variations form, check out our handy guide on the topic.

Product variation images

You can upload an image for each variation. When the user selects that variation, the main product image will switch to the variation image.

To upload a product variation image:

  1. Click the blue image icon
  2. Select the image

It’s pretty simple.

(By the way, if you want to display swatches for variations, you can check this guide from RexTheme).

Step 6: Set default variation

Finally, you might like to set a default variation for the customer when they arrive on the product page.

  1. In the ‘Default Form Values’, set a default variation for each attribute
  2. Click ‘Save changes’
WooCommerce default variations

A WooCommerce variable product on the front end

Let’s take a look at the example we’ve used throughout this article: the shirt with colour and size attributes.

Once we’ve created all our variations, we can view the product on the front end. Note that there are two dropdown fields, one for each attribute.

WooCommerce variable product example – male shirt

You can see some other information too:

  • Price range: in this example, I’ve set some shirts to be more expensive than others. WooCommerce therefore displays a price range under the title showing the customer the minimum and maximum they can expect to pay for the product
  • Stock information: under the product attribute fields you can see information about how many items for the selected variation are in stock
  • Add to cart button: the add to cart button will be disabled until a variation is selected

If you want, you can also list product variations as a table and it’s going to look like this:

Enhancing WooCommerce product variations

Now, we’ve covered the standard WooCommerce settings for variable products in depth. But you might find that these still don’t meet your exact requirements.

Let’s look at two ways to make your variable product even more powerful and feature-rich by using a WooCommerce variable product plugin.

Adding extra fields to WooCommerce variable products

A popular requirement is to be able to customise products in WooCommerce. This is a step further than having product variations in that it allows customers to create their own personalised versions of products.

This is often achieved by adding input fields to product pages – e.g. you can let a customer define text to be engraved on your product by letting them fill in a text field. The text is captured as part of the product and you, as store owner, receive it as part of the order. You can find out more about the ins and outs of customising products in WooCommerce here.

You can add customisable elements to product variations using the WooCommerce Product Add Ons Ultimate plugin.

Using a WooCommerce plugin

Plugins in WooCommerce are great for business owners who want to customize their store and offer a better experience to customers. They can also give you greater control over the product display and fix common issues such as WooCommerce variations not showing properly or at all.

For example, WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate allows you to add extra options to your configurable products and display items as child products. You can also choose to add different options to different variations. So, in the shirt example, we’ve used throughout this article, we could add the option for users to have some custom text stitching done, or even to upload a monogram.

However, we might want to limit the customisation options to certain variations. Perhaps the stitching will only work with certain colour shirts. Using WooCommerce Product Add Ons Ultimate, it’s possible to add custom options to different variations.

Another possibility is to display variations as single products. This option is great for products that have too many variations such as hardware goods or stationary items.

Providing more information about variations

WooCommerce already does a great job of allowing you to create variation-specific information. As well as all the product data, like price, stock, etc, you can also write separate descriptions for each variation.

One drawback is over variation stock control, however. Many users want the ability to disable or grey out variations that are not in stock. WooCommerce Better Variations gives you this ability.

Better Variations – a WooCommerce variable product plugin

Imagine that in our shirt example, the Medium Green variation was sold out. With WooCommerce Better Variations, we can show that to the customer more clearly than standard WooCommerce does.

WooCommerce out of stock variation greyed out

Better Variations also gives you the chance to set a ‘back in stock’ date that you can display to the customer, just so they know exactly when their item will be available to purchase again.

So, those are two examples of a WooCommerce variable product plugin that you can use to extend your shop’s capabilities.

Get the most out of your store with WooCommerce variable products

Hopefully, this article has given you plenty of pointers about what a variable product is. In addition, it should also have helped give you ideas about how to use variations.

Variable products shouldn’t be too difficult to use, once you get the hang of them. If you need to extend them with some extra functionality, consider the WooCommerce Product Add Ons Ultimate and/or Better Variations plugins.

The post Mastering WooCommerce: Adding Custom Fields for WooCommerce Variations appeared first on Plugin Republic.

]]>
In this article, we’ll look at how to add WooCommerce custom fields for variations. Custom fields can mean either:

We’ll look at both options.

Adding WooCommerce custom fields for variations

I wrote extensively about adding custom fields to WooCommerce products here. In this article, we’ll focus specifically on adding custom fields to variations.

Let’s take a look at an example product. We’ll imagine that we’re selling clothing and we would like to provide specific sizing information about each variation. Of course, you can use this to display any kind of additional product data.

What are custom fields for product variations in WooCommerce?

Custom fields in WooCommerce for product variations allow site owners to add data to a specific product or a variation of this product. Only when a customer clicks or chooses this item can they see the information relating to it.

Let’s take a look at an example product. Imagine that we’re selling clothing, and would like to provide specific sizing information about each variation. Of course, you can use this to display any kind of additional product data.

WooCommerce custom fields for variations

When the customer chooses a different variation, the size information changes, and this is the main idea behind custom fields for a specific variation. It makes no sense to fill the page with information that is not required, in this case, size information about XL, when the chosen product is in size S.

If you’re curious to see this in action, you can view the demo product here.

How do variation custom fields work?

On the back end, variation custom fields are just input fields that are directly connected to the specific variation of the product. It will only show up if a specific condition is met, for example, the customer choosing the size from a drop-down menu or putting the item in their cart.

Why do we need WooCommerce custom fields for variations?

Why not just add one big table for all variations? We could do this and then expect the user to find the data for the variation that they’re interested in.

But this would be clumsy and not helpful to the customer. Much better to give them exactly the information they need.

Custom fields for multiple variations

Note the second table in the screenshot above. It shows some care instructions for the garment. In this case, the custom field is added to multiple variations. We’ll also look at how to achieve this.

How to add custom data fields to WooCommerce variations

To add our custom fields, we’ll need the WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate plugin. This gives us the ability to add all kinds of custom fields to WooCommerce products.

Once you’ve downloaded and installed the plugin, you can start adding your custom fields.

Step One: add a new field

Let’s assume our product variations are already set up. To add our variation-specific custom fields, go to the Product Add-Ons tab in the Product data section.

Click ‘Add Group’ then ‘Add Field’. In the ‘Field Type’ setting, choose ‘Information’.

WooCommerce custom fields for variations settings

In the screenshot above, you can see the Product Add-Ons panel. We’ve selected ‘Information’ as the field type and entered a label for the field.

Step two: add data rows

The Information field allows us to create a table of data for each variation. Click the ‘Add Row’ button to add a new row, then enter a label and data in each field.

Step three: specify the variation

Finally, you can select the variation(s) in the ‘Variations’ field. Choose the variations that you’d like this field to display for.

WooCommerce custom fields - variation specific field

Note that you can choose more than one variation here if you’d like to display the custom field for multiple variations.

Step four: repeat

Finally, you just need to repeat these steps for any other custom fields you want to add for different variations. The Add-Ons Ultimate plugin allows you to duplicate fields – just click ‘Copy’ at the top of the field you want to duplicate.

This makes it much easier to create multiple fields for all your variations.

On the front end, the product will now look like this.

Display custom data for WooCommerce variations

When the user changes the variation, the custom field will change too.

Adding WooCommerce custom fields to multiple variations

Now let’s look at adding the same custom field to multiple variations. This isn’t particularly different.

In our example product, we created a care instruction table, complete with icons. We’ll display this for all variations:

WooCommerce custom data fields for variations

You can see in the screenshot above that we’ve added this field to multiple variations. You can add custom fields to as many or as few variations as you like.

If you want to display the field for all variations, just leave the ‘Variations’ field empty.

How to add custom input fields to WooCommerce variations

Add-Ons Ultimate allows you to add several input fields to WooCommerce variations, including:

  • Calculation fields
  • Checkbox fields
  • Checkbox groups
  • Datepickers
  • Image swatches
  • Name your price fields
  • Number fields
  • Child products
  • Radio groups
  • Select / dropdowns
  • Text and textarea fields

Let’s have a look at another example, this time for a custom t-shirt that the user can personalise with their name and an image. You can see the demo product here.

Adding a text field to a WooCommerce variation

Let’s look at how to add a text field to WooCommerce variations. In our example, this is for a custom slogan or name that will get printed on the teeshirt.

Just as above, click ‘Add Field’. Then choose ‘Text’ as the field type:

Text field parameters

Note that there are several parameters that you can use to refine your text field, including:

  • Setting the field to be required
  • Specifying a minimum and/or maximum number of characters
  • Charging a cost per character
  • Allowing some free characters
  • Only allowing alphanumeric characters
  • Only charging for alphanumeric characters

Again, as with the information field above, you can choose whether to display this field for one, some or all variations.

Adding a condition to WooCommerce custom fields

Another very handy feature of the WooCommerce Product Add Ons Ultimate is the option to add group and field conditions in WooCommerce

As the name suggests, conditions are previously specified scenarios that are fulfilled once a certain condition is met. For example, you have a text field that only shows up when the end user selects a certain checkbox.

To do that, you’ll need two fields – the main one and the dependent one. The main field, the checkbox in our example, will appear no matter what, while the other one depends on the status of the first.

This is how this looks like in the plugin.

To add the desired condition, click the Add Condition button and go over the dropdown fields.

In the first one, you can choose between:

  • Hide this field if.
  • Show this field if.

In the second one, you can choose between:

  • All rules match
  • Any rules match
  1. After that, you only have to choose the type of the first field (checkbox in our case), the operator (Is), and the value of the field, and you’re done!

Group conditions are created very similarly, but you need to remember that you can’t use group conditions on global groups.

  1. Just like with the field condition, start by clicking the Add Condition button.

2. Then, you just need to fill in the same fields.

You’re adding extra options to your products but you only want to show them when certain conditions are met. For instance, customers can enter text to be engraved on your products – but only if they’ve selected a checkbox first. Or – some options are available only for certain product variations. This article will show you how to use the WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate plugin to create conditional product add-ons.

Everything you need to know about WooCommerce conditional product options and add-ons

Through this article, we’ll look at what WooCommerce extra product options are and how you might use them in WooCommerce.

Use the menu on the left to navigate the article.

We’ll look at how you can apply conditional logic to enhance your product options, with several examples of how this might apply in real life. The examples will include:

  • An online jewellery store that offers optional engraving
  • A store selling personalised gifts
  • A furniture store selling highly customisable products

I’ll walk through examples of simple and complex conditions, including fields that are dependent on multiple conditions being met, with clear instructions on how to set them up.

With the Product Add-Ons Ultimate plugin, you can apply your conditions to fields or to groups.

We’ll also look at applying conditional logic to WooCommerce product variations so that the customer will only see certain fields if they choose specific variations.

Conditional extra product options in WooCommerce

Product options are extra fields, like checkboxes, text fields, dropdowns, etc, that are added to WooCommerce products, usually through an add-ons plugin like WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate plugin.

Group conditions

Note that the examples in this article show you how to display or hide individual fields based on conditions. But you can extend this to apply your conditions to entire groups. This means that you can show or hide multiple fields with a single set of conditional rules.

What is conditional logic?

Let’s step back for a minute and think about what we mean exactly when we talk about conditional logic.

The term ‘conditional logic’ does sound a bit scary. But all it really means is:

If this thing happens, then that thing will happen too

So, for example, let’s imagine we’re running a jewellery business and we’d like to offer our customers the option to have an engraving on their purchased product.

We don’t want a great big text field cluttering up the page so we add a checkbox saying ‘Would you like engraving?’ When the customer selects the checkbox, then the text field appears:

That, in its simplest form, is what conditional logic means.

There are several examples below of how to create product options in WooCommerce using simple conditional logic like this and using more complex conditional logic.

Conditional logic triggers and outcomes

In all cases, the outcome of a piece of conditional logic is to change the visibility of a product option: either to show or hide it. In the example of the engraving above, the outcome of selecting the checkbox is to show the text field.

However, even if the outcome is always the same, the triggers can be different.

Conditions based on other fields’ values

The most common trigger is based on checking the value of one or more fields. The customer can trigger a piece of conditional logic when they change the value of a field. For example:

  • Checking or unchecking a text box
  • Entering certain defined text into a text input field
  • Choosing a specific option from a group of radio buttons or from a dropdown field
  • Selecting a specific combination of checkboxes from a group of checkboxes

Cost-based conditional logic

Another trigger is based on cost. So, for example, let’s say that your custom engraving is only available when the customer chooses a product over a certain cost.

We can set a trigger so that the extra field only displays when the cost of the product goes over a certain value. The cost can be altered by the customer if they choose certain options, or if they increase the quantity they’re purchasing.

Product variations conditional logic

A third conditional logic trigger is based on product variations. Using the jewellery example again, let’s imagine that you are using variable products. Engraving is only available on certain variations. In this case, the extra field will only be displayed when specific variations are selected.

Multiple triggers

Product Add-Ons Ultimate can handle all these triggers, even complex ones like showing/hiding a field only when certain options are selected in a checkbox group. It can also handle combining multiple triggers, like only showing a field for certain variations when the cost is greater than a certain value.

Evaluating conditions – how to check what’s true and what’s not

As I mentioned above, the outcome of a condition is to change the visibility of a field. There can be more than one trigger and triggers can be defined in multiple ways. Let’s have a look at an example:

On the first line, we have two select fields. One is an action to define what the outcome of the logic will be – i.e. to ‘Show this field’. The second is an operator to define whether all your triggers need to be true or if any trigger needs to be true. In this case it’s set to ‘Any rule matches’.

The next two lines show two rules. Firstly, we’ll check the value of ‘Field 1’ to see if it’s set to ‘Option 1’. Then, we’ll check the value of ‘Field 2’ to see if it’s set to ‘Option 2’.

Only one of our rules needs to be true for this field to be displayed because our operator is ‘Any rule matches’.

Makes sense? Next, I’ll show you how to set up WooCommerce conditional variations using WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate.

How to set up WooCommerce product variations conditional logic: Step-by-step tutorial

In this tutorial, we’ll show you how to enhance your product offering with WooCommerce conditional variations. We’ll take you through the process of setting up conditional logic for product options in WooCommerce, step-by-step.

Let’s assume you already have a WooCommerce store set up and a product that you’d like to add conditional logic to.

Step 1: Install the WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate plugin

Download and install the WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate plugin. Here’s how:

  1. Purchase the plugin – you’ll receive an email with a link.
  2. Download the zip file from the link.
  3. In your WordPress dashboard, go to Plugins > Add New > Upload Plugin.
  4. Locate your zip file.
  5. Click ‘Install Plugin’ then ‘Activate’

Now your plugin will be installed and activated.

Step 2: Create extra fields for your product

Let’s say you want to allow your customers to personalize a greeting card online.

Before we can create our conditional logic rules, we need to create the extra fields for the product – the checkbox and the text field – using the Add-Ons Ultimate plugin.

A screenshot demonstrating how to navigate to the Product Add Ons creation tab from the WooCommerce product editor.
  1. Click the ‘Product Add Ons’ tab in the ‘Product data’ section.
  2. Click ‘Add Group’ to create a group for your personalizable field.
  3. Finally, click ‘Add Field’ to create your first personalizable field.

Following these steps will take you to this interface:

The form for creating additional fields for product pages using the WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate plugin.

Step 3: Define your groups and fields

Product Add-Ons Ultimate allows you to create additional fields and organize them into groups.

Here, we’ll create a group for options for personalizing the front of the card, but you could also add a second group for options for personalizing inside the card.

  1. Enter some text in the ‘Group Title’ and ‘Group Description’ fields – this is optional.
  2. In the ‘Field Type’ dropdown, choose ‘Select’.
  3. Add a custom phrase or slogan as options.
  4. You can also enter some text in the ‘Field Label’ and ‘Field Description’ fields to help the customer understand what the field is for.
Adding information such as field label, type and price to the additional fields form for product pages using the WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate plugin.

Step 4: Use conditional logic

Now we’re going to use conditional logic to show or hide fields based on certain conditions.

  1. Create a new field and choose ‘Text’ as the ‘Field Type’.
  2. Add a field label and description as required.
  3. To apply some conditional logic to this product option, click the ‘Add Condition’ button.
The form for adding conditional logic to extra product options via the Add-Ons Ultimate plugin.

When you click ‘Add Condition’ you get some new options:

  • Choose whether to hide or show the field.
  • Choose whether all conditions need to be met, or just one.
  • Then add the conditions – choose the field (in this case, the ‘Main Message’ field) and the value that it needs to meet the condition (in this case, if the user has selected the ‘[Choose your own message]’ option).

Now, this field will only be displayed on the front end if the user selects [Choose your own message] from the select field.

You’ll notice some other options in the text field above:

  • ‘Field Price’: We’re going to charge the customer extra if they want to personalize the card with a custom message
  • ‘Max Chars’: We don’t want the customer writing too much text so we’ve set the maximum number of characters to 50 for the custom message

Step 5: Add an image upload field

Let’s finish off the fields for the front of the card with an image upload field. Image uploads are a popular method of WooCommerce product personalization.

  1. Add a new field and select ‘Upload’ as the field type
The form for uploading photos to product pages with WooCommerce conditional variations using the Add-Ons Ultimate plugin.

Step 6: Review your product

We’ve finished all our personalization options so we just need to save and publish the product and take a look at it on the front end.

This is what the product will look like in the Storefront theme.

WooCommerce Conditional Variations: Frequently Asked Questions

How do I add multiple variations in WooCommerce?

There are two ways to add multiple variations in WooCommerce – you can either use the default WooCommerce functionality, or you can use a plugin like WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate. We’ll talk about both options here.

Adding multiple variations using the default WooCommerce functionality

Adding multiple variations using the default WooCommerce functionality is a little complicated. You must add the variations to each product individually, which can be time-consuming. Let’s go through it, step-by-step.

Selecting ‘Variable product' in the 'Product type' dropdown menu on the 'Product data' panel in WooCommerce product pages.
  1. Open the WooCommerce product page and scroll to the ‘Product Data’ section.
  2. Select ‘Variable product’ from the dropdown menu.
Selecting 'Custom product attribute' on the 'Attributes' tab on the 'Product data' panel in WooCommerce product pages.
  1. Select the ‘Attributes’ tab.
  2. From here, you can select an existing global attribute from the dropdown menu, or create custom attributes by selecting ‘Custom product attribute.’
Selecting 'Used for variations' on the 'Attributes' tab on the 'Product data' panel in WooCommerce product pages.
  1. Add the attributes you wish to apply, including values for each.
  2. Enable the ‘Use for variations’ option and select ‘Save attributes.’
Selecting ‘Create variations from all attributes’ on the ‘Attributes’ tab on the ‘Product data’ panel in WooCommerce product pages.
  1. Select the ‘Variations’ tab.
  2. Select the ‘Create variations from all attributes’ option from the dropdown menu.
  3. Variations will appear for every possible combination of attributes. For example, if you’ve added a “Color” attribute with Red and Blue terms and a “Size” attribute with Small and Large terms, you’ll get 4 variations – small red, large red, small blue, and large blue. If you wish, you can add or change details at this stage.
  4. Select ‘Save changes’.
  5. Select ‘Publish’.

While WooCommerce allows you to add multiple variations, it’s something of a tedious process. The default product options are not designed to let you edit multiple variations at once and limit how you can display variations to your customers on the front end.

Plugins like WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate allow you to create custom products with extra options and fields that can be applied to any product on your WooCommerce site, saving you time and effort.

Adding multiple variations using WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate

Creating variations in bulk using WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate is quick and simple.

  1. Open the product’s edit page and select the ‘Product Add-Ons’ tab.
  2. Add a new group and click on the ‘Add Field’ button to start adding extra options to your product.
Adding multiple options to a field using the WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate plugin.
  1. Select ‘Checkbox Group’ from the Field Type dropdown menu to let customers select from a list of options. Add your checkbox options using the ‘Add Option’ button.
  2. There are a number of types of variation available, including editable text boxes to collect additional information from the customer, file uploads to let customers add their own images when ordering a product, and pricing options, for example, to allow customers to set their own price.
How a product listing with multiple variations looks on the front end, when created using the WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate plugin.

How many variations can WooCommerce handle?

In theory, you can add as many variations as you like.

In practice, the number of variations WooCommerce can effectively handle depends on factors such as server capacity and website configuration. It’s important to monitor the performance of your WooCommerce store when using multiple variations.

What are the best practices for using Woocommerce conditional variations?

Some best practices for using conditional variations include:

  1. Keep it simple – avoid overwhelming customers with too many conditional variations. Stick to offering relevant options.
  2. Test thoroughly – before implementing conditional variations on your live site, test them in a staging environment to ensure they work as intended.
  3. Regularly update plugins – ensure that the plugins you use for conditional variations are up to date, and include the latest features and security enhancements.

Conditional options for WooCommerce – final thoughts

WooCommerce product add-ons conditional logic sounds like a scary topic – but hopefully you’ve seen how easy it is to set up, even for groups and variations.

All you need is the WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate plugin.

The post 6 must-have product grid WordPress plugins for 2023 appeared first on Plugin Republic.

]]>

The way you present products in your eCommerce store plays a pivotal role in attracting and engaging customers. Organizing your products into an attractive grid layout not only enhances the visual appeal of your store but also makes it more user-friendly. Customers can compare their purchasing options and add multiple products to their shopping cart without having to navigate to another page.

However, for many WooCommerce store owners, the process of setting up these grid layouts can be a bit perplexing.

In this article, we’ll guide you through the advantages of using product grids and introduce you to the top six product grid plugins available in 2023. Additionally, we’ll provide a quick tutorial to get you started using our personal favorite plugin. By the end of this read, you’ll be well-equipped to navigate the world of product grids with confidence.

Why is a well-organized product grid essential?

A well-organized product grid plays a crucial role in WooCommerce, and its significance cannot be overstated. Let’s start by understanding what a product grid is: it’s a layout where multiple products are neatly showcased side by side.

Now, why does this matter? Imagine walking into a well-arranged store where items are displayed logically. Similarly, a well-organized product grid creates a seamless user experience, making it effortless for customers to explore and compare products. This convenience translates into a potential boost in sales – when customers find it easy to navigate and compare, they’re more likely to make purchases.

The benefits go beyond usability. A polished product grid elevates your site’s appearance, enhancing your brand’s impact on customers. The impression of professionalism and attention to detail goes a long way in building trust and customer loyalty.

Beyond appearances, a well-organized product grid also contributes to better website performance and improved SEO. Search engines appreciate structured content, leading to better search rankings and visibility for your store.

While some WooCommerce themes offer basic grid layouts, you might find them limiting. Here’s where dedicated product grid plugins come in. They provide enhanced options for displaying products, including improved layouts and advanced features like filtering – features that might surpass what your theme offers. Additionally, these plugins empower you to extend product grids beyond the standard shop page, allowing you to display them on your homepage or other landing pages, thus enhancing the overall shopping experience throughout your store.

WooCommerce payment gateway based fees and discounts https://pluginrepublic.com/woocommerce-payment-gateway-based-fees/ https://pluginrepublic.com/woocommerce-payment-gateway-based-fees/#comments Thu, 07 Sep 2023 09:52:39 +0000 https://pluginrepublic.com/?p=30002 Two methods to add dynamic charges to the WooCommerce checkout

The post WooCommerce payment gateway based fees and discounts appeared first on Plugin Republic.

]]>
WooCommerce payment gateway based fees and discounts for WooCommerce are an excellent way of incentivising or discouraging users from choosing certain methods of payment. They’re also an important way for you to ensure you don’t lose out through charges imposed by certain payment gateways. Stick around as we explore the multifaceted benefits of tailoring fees and discounts to specific WooCommerce payment gateways.

Payment gateway based fees and discounts for WooCommerce

In this article, I’m going to look at two ways to apply WooCommerce payment gateway based fees and discounts for WooCommerce:

  • Use a plugin to apply fees and discounts in WooCommerce according to the payment gateway
  • Programmatically apply fees and discounts according to the payment gateway

By the way, if you’re looking specifically for adding a cash on delivery fee, take a look at this article.

What is a WooCommerce payment gateway?

The payment gateway is the method used by the customer to pay for their order. Examples are PayPal, Stripe (for credit card payments), bank transfer, cash on delivery, and many more.

What payment gateways work with WooCommerce?

Some of the most popular payment gateways that work with WooCommerce are:

The full list of WooCommerce payment gateways is available on WooCommerce’s Extension Store, and you’ll be able to filter these by price. The majority of payment gateways are free to download though some require monthly payments.

Which payment gateway should I choose?

Which payment gateway you choose is going to be down to a number of factors, including:

  • Where you’re based – Not all payment gateways are available in every country
  • How much you’re prepared to pay in fees – each gateway has a different fee structure
  • How much you want to spend on initial costs – Some payment gateway plugins are free, others will cost you just to install them on your site

Ultimately, finding the perfect payment gateway hinges on carefully weighing these factors to ensure seamless transactions and optimal financial efficiency for your online business.

What do WooCommerce payment gateways cost?

Costs vary. For instance, PayPal can charge you up to 3.4% per transaction. That’s a big chunk of your profits.

On the other hand, if you offer BACS payments, Cash on Delivery, or other local pickup or collection options, you may not have any cost associated with the payment gateway.

This is the main reason you might want to levy a WooCommerce payment gateway based fee or discount – either to add a surcharge on the payment gateways that cost you extra. Or to offer a discount to customers if they use a cheaper payment method.

Not all payment gateways have costs attached

A really simple way of saving costs for yourself, as the business owner, and for your customers is to offer a collection option. Of course, this depends on the nature of your business but it works really well for stores that sell locally.

You can also offer bank transfer or cheque options. This increases the amount of manual work you need to do, and it slows down the overall process – but it does allow you to save some money.

Why use multiple gateways?

You might be thinking that it would just be simpler to only offer the cheapest payment gateways. Up to a point, that might be true. But there’s a good chance that you’ll miss out on sales if you don’t offer customers payment options that they’re familiar with.

For instance, although it’s expensive, PayPal is a really convenient option for many people to use for payment. They don’t need to find their credit card, they only need to click a button.

So having choice on your site can be to your benefit.

Why apply different charges according to the payment gateway used?

There are several reasons to apply different charges based on the payment gateway, including:

  • Credit card providers usually charge you a percentage of each transaction. You can recoup this fee by adding the equivalent amount to the cost of the order and therefore passing the transactional fees from your bank on to your customer.
  • PayPal charges you a fee on every transaction. You can add a flat fee or a percentage of the overall order total to recover this cost from the user.
  • With PayPal and credit card gateways, you can often find that you are subject to disputes or chargebacks. The costs for these vary between gateway providers but by adding a small surcharge to users who check out through one of these gateways, you can provide a small insurance for yourself against future disputes.
  • If you accept payment via BACS or bank transfer, you might be charged per transaction by your bank. You can add a small fixed fee to the cart to cover these bank charges.
  • You can offer incentives to your customers to pay by your preferred payment gateway by applying a discount. For instance, if you would like to encourage users to pay via bank transfer, you can offer a fixed or percentage discount.

Which is better – fee or discount?

Should you cost your products at a lower price, then add an extra fee for certain payment gateways? Or should you build the fees into your product price, then offer a discount if the customer chooses a less expensive payment gateway?

This will depend on the type of business you’re running:

  • Pricing products lower is always a good encouragement for customers; but seeing an extra fee imposed at checkout can be a cause of cart abandonment
  • Having slightly more expensive products but a discount at checkout could be a pleasant surprise for customers

Using a WooCommerce plugin to apply fees and discounts based on payment gateway

However you decide to approach WooCommerce payment gateway based fees and discounts, you’ll need an extension to WooCommerce.

The WooCommerce payment gateway fees plugin that I’m using is WooCommerce Fees and Discounts.

I’m going to provide a couple of different examples using this WooCommerce plugin to show how to apply fees and discounts, either as fixed amounts or percentages of the overall total.

Install WooCommerce Fees and Discounts

  • Once you’ve downloaded the Fees and Discounts plugin, upload it to your WordPress admin via Plugins > Add New > Upload.
  • Activate the plugin then go to WooCommerce > Settings > Fees and Discounts.
  • Ensure that the ‘Enable Payment Gateway Fees and Discounts’ option is selected. You should see all the active payment gateways on your site available as clickable links below the main tabs.
WooCommerce payment gateways

You can set fees and discounts for each payment gateway separately.

How to add a fee to PayPal in WooCommerce

In this example, I’ll walk through charge to add a fixed fee to customers who check out via PayPal. But you can easily adapt this method to add a fee to any payment method.

  • Click on the PayPal Checkout link
  • In ‘Label’ enter the text that you’d like to use to denote the extra charge
  • Choose ‘Fixed fee’ in the ‘Type’ dropdown
  • Enter the amount of the fixed fee in the ‘Amount’ field
  • Decide whether to include shipping costs in the cart total. (Note that this is mainly relevant if you’re charging a percentage rather than a fixed fee and/or if you are setting minimum or maximum values for the cart)
  • In ‘Minimum cart amount’, you can enter a minimum total for the cart before any charges are applied.
  • For ‘Maximum cart amount’, you can enter a maximum total for the cart above which no charges will be applied.
  • Check ‘Apply tax’ if you would like tax to be applied to the extra charge
  • Select the ‘Tax class’
  • Click ‘Save changes’
WooCommerce add fee to PayPal

When you choose ‘PayPal’ at the checkout, you’ll see an additional fee added to the totals:

WooCommerce additional fee for PayPal

How to apply a discount for certain payment gateways in WooCommerce

In this example, I’ll walk through applying a discount for customers who choose to pay via direct bank transfer. For the sake of the example, the discount will be calculated as a percentage of the overall order total.

  • Click on the ‘Direct bank transfer’ link
  • In ‘Label’ enter the text that you’d like to use to describe the discount
  • Choose ‘Percentage discount’ in the ‘Type’ dropdown
  • Enter the percentage in the ‘Amount’ field. In this example, we’ll give the customer a 1% discount for checking out via direct bank transfer.
  • Decide whether to include shipping costs in the cart total.
  • In ‘Minimum cart amount’, you can enter a minimum total for the cart before any charges are applied. In this example, we’ve set a minimum of 75 – meaning that the customer will need to spend 75 of whatever currency being used before they qualify for the discount
  • For ‘Maximum cart amount’, you can enter a maximum total for the cart above which no charges will be applied.
  • In ‘Minimum fee/discount amount’, you can enter a minimum value for the discount
  • For ‘Maximum fee/discount amount’, you can set a maximum value for the discount. In this example, we’ve limited the discount to 5
  • Check ‘Apply tax’ if you would like tax to be applied to the extra charge
  • Select the ‘Tax class’
  • Click ‘Save changes’
WooCommerce payment gateway discount

Now, when the user adds at least $75 worth of goods to the cart, they’ll qualify for 1% discount to a maximum of $5.

WooCommerce percentage based discount at checkout

Programmatically apply fees and discounts in WooCommerce according to the payment gateway

If you prefer to create your own solution, here is some code to help with applying a fee at checkout based on payment gateway.

View this code snippet on GitHub.

This function gets the selected payment gateway for the user’s session and checks to see if it’s PayPal. Note that I’m using the ‘PayPal Checkout’ gateway rather than the older, standard ‘PayPal’ checkout.

If the user has selected the payment gateway, use WC()->cart->add_fee to add the fee. There are four parameters: label, amount, is_taxable, tax_class.

Finally, the function is hooked to woocommerce_cart_calculate_fees so it runs whenever the cart calculates fees.

Now, we just need a small piece of JavaScript to detect when the payment gateway is changed by the user. This triggers the WooCommerce update_checkout event which, in turn, will re-trigger woocommerce_cart_calculate_fees.

Wrapping up

I hope this has been helpful in demonstrating a couple of different ways to add fees or discounts to the WooCommerce checkout. We looked at adding a fee to the WooCommerce payment method and we looked at ways to apply discounts depending on the gateway chosen.

Any questions, please leave a comment. You can find out more about the WooCommerce Fees and Discounts here.

Product personalization is an attractive selling point in eCommerce. Whether you sell apparel, gift hampers, tech products, decor items, or anything else, you may want to let customers add extra options to customize their products before checking out in your WooCommerce store.

This article is your 5-minute guide that shows you how to do just that! It all starts with the WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate, which we introduce to you below. We’ll then show you how to set up a personalized product using the plugin using add-on fields and conditional logic, discuss the full advantages of enabling product personalization in your store, and talk about overcoming the core challenges involved.

WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate

To get started with your WooCommerce product personalization, you’ll need the Product Add-Ons Ultimate plugin.

Using the Add-Ons Ultimate plugin, you’ll be able to easily add extra fields to your products. Let’s take a quick walkthrough using an example scenario.

WooCommerce Product Personalization in 8 Steps

In our example, we’re going to pretend that we would like to allow our customers to personalize a greetinggreetings card online. We’re going to allow them to personalize the product in the following ways:

  • Add a pre-defined message to the front of the card
  • Use conditional logic to optionally add a custom message
  • Upload a custom image for the front of the card
  • Write a personal message inside the card

It’s a pretty simple example and I’m sure you can think of lots of ways to improve it. But it’s fine as a way of walking through some of the plugin’s capabilities.

(If you’d like to find out more about adding WooCommerce gift wrapping and messages, take a look at this article.)

Step 1: Download and install the plugin

I’m assuming that you’ve got your WooCommerce store already up and running. All you need for product personalization is to install the Add-Ons Ultimate plugin:

  1. When you purchase the plugin, you’ll receive an email with a link. Download the zip file from the link
  2. In your WordPress dashboard, go to Plugins > Add New > Upload Plugin
  3. Browse to your zip file
  4. Click ‘Install Plugin’ then ‘Activate’

Now your plugin will be installed and activated.

Step 2: Create a product to be personalized

Create a new product that you’re going to allow your customers to personalize. So, in our example, we’re going to create a product called ‘Personalized Greetings Card’ (more imaginative names are available).

Step 3: Add some extra fields to your product

WooCommerce personalized product back end
  1. Click the ‘Product Add Ons’ tab in the ‘Product data’ section
  2. Click ‘Add Group’ to create a group for your personalizable field
  3. Finally, click ‘Add Field’ to create your first personalizable field
WooCommerce personalized product plugin

You’ll see something like the screen above.

Step 4: Define your groups and fields

Product Add-Ons Ultimate allows you to create additional fields and organize them into groups. We’re going to create a group for options for personalizing the front of the card and a group for options for personalizing inside the card.

  1. Enter some text in the ‘Group Title’ and ‘Group Description’ fields – these are optional
  2. In the ‘Field Type’ dropdown, select ‘Select’
  3. Add a custom phrase or slogan as options
  4. You can also enter some text in the ‘Field Label’ and ‘Field Description’ fields to help the customer know what the field is for
WooCommerce personalized product select field

Note that I’ve also selected a couple of further options:

  • ‘First field is instruction only’: I’ve checked this option because I’ve added an instruction (‘– Select a message –‘) to the user as the first option. By checking this field, I can ensure that one of the options below will have to be selected.
  • ‘Required Field’: by checking this option, I am ensuring that the customer will need to choose a value from this field (and not the first option, which is an instruction).

Step 5: Use conditional logic

A really important feature of any personalized product is the ability to show or hide fields based on certain conditions.

Product Add-Ons Ultimate allows you to use conditional logic:

  1. Create a new field and choose ‘Text’ as the ‘Field Type’
  2. Add a field label and description as required
  3. To apply some conditional logic to this product, click the ‘Add Condition’ button
WooCommerce personalized product conditional logic

When you click ‘Add Condition’ you get some new options:

  • Choose whether to hide or show the field
  • Choose whether all conditions need to be met, or just one
  • Then add the conditions – choose the field (in this case, the ‘Main Message’ field) and the value that it needs to meet the condition (in this case, if the user has selected the ‘[Choose your own message]’ option

Now, this field will only be displayed on the front end if the user selects [Choose your own message] from the select field.

Text field options

Note some other options in the text field above:

  • ‘Field Price’: I’ve decided that we’re going to charge the customer extra if they want to personalize the card with a custom message
  • ‘Max Chars’: we also don’t want the customer writing an essay so I’ve set the maximum number of characters to 50 for the custom message

Step 6: Add an image upload field

Let’s finish off the fields for the front of the card with an image upload field. Image uploads are a very popular method of WooCommerce product personalization.

  1. Add a new field and select ‘Upload’ as the field type
  2. That’s it (Product Add-Ons Ultimate makes it easy to add upload fields to WooCommerce)
WooCommerce image upload field

Step 7: Add another group for inside the card

Just to finish off all the personalization options, we’ll add another group for extra fields for the inside of the card. Separating fields into groups helps the customer.

  1. Click ‘Add Group’
  2. Click ‘Add Field’
  3. Enter your field options. In this case, we’ll use a textarea field to allow the user to write a more substantial message
WooCommerce textarea options

Note some more options that I’ve used in this field:

  • ‘Price Per Character’: maybe you want to charge your customer per character for their message. Checking this option means that the value in the ‘Field Price’ field will be multiplied by the number of characters that the customer enters.
  • ‘Free Chars’: we’re kind people so we’re not going to charge our customers for every single letter they write. Instead, we’ll give them 50 characters for free and only charge them when they go over.
  • ‘Only Charge Alphanumeric’: and we’re reasonable too – so we won’t charge for spaces, only for alphanumeric characters

Step 8: Sit back and admire your work

We’ve finished all our personalization options so we just need to save or publish the product and take a look at it on the front end.

This is what the product will look like in the Storefront theme. You can use any theme you like, and style it with CSS if you wish.

Advantages of personalizing WooCommerce products

If you’ve read this far, you probably already have a good idea of the benefits of letting your customers personalize your products.

In essence, I think the top three advantages are:

  • Increase sales conversions
  • Build customer loyalty
  • Enrich your products

Addressing common challenges in implementing WooCommerce product personalization

The implementation of WooCommerce product personalization presents several key challenges that impact user experience and operational efficiency. A primary concern is the organization of add-ons to prevent overwhelming users during the customization process. A solution like the WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate plugin addresses this by offering conditional logic functionality, enabling fields to dynamically appear based on previous selections. Additionally, the plugin facilitates a structured approach by allowing information to be categorized into tabs, groups, or accordions, guiding users through a step-by-step customization journey.

Another significant challenge revolves around maintaining cost-effectiveness in operations. The plugin assists in overcoming this challenge by enabling businesses to assign prices to various add-ons. For instance, if a business offers custom designs on clothing, the plugin allows for upcharges based on the number of letters or complexity of the design. This feature ensures that businesses can cover the costs associated with personalized additions while providing transparency to customers.

The only WooCommerce personalized plugin you’ll ever need

Whether you’re running a boutique fashion outlet or a tech-centric emporium, integrating add-ons can significantly elevate your online store’s appeal.

Product add-ons provide WooCommerce store owners with opportunities to create personalized shopping experiences for their customers. This way, shoppers can fully personalize and create unique products before adding them to their cart.

Imagine providing customers with the option to add a touch of elegance by selecting gift wrap for their purchases, or granting them the freedom to personalize products according to their preferences. These possibilities are made tangible through the utilization of add-ons in WooCommerce. And the best part? You don’t need to be a coding wizard to make it happen.

Since WooCommerce by default doesn’t let you add product add-ons, store owners can use plugins to easily incorporate this functionality into their sites. Plugins not only simplify the processing of adding add-ons to your site but also fit well into your workflow and (most of the time) will be compatible with your theme. This ensures you don’t encounter design issues on your WordPress site.

We’ve compared some of the best plugins out there and created a guide you can use to figure out which WooCommerce product plugin will work best for your shop.

Top WooCommerce product add-on plugins for 2023

Let’s go over the best WooCommerce product add-on plugins so it’s easier for you to pick the right one for your online store.

Key features:

  • You have a wide range of add-ons to choose from when adding extra options to your WooCommerce products. You can showcase different product personalization options in text fields, number fields, checkboxes, radio buttons, select fields, image upload fields, and even advanced fields like name-your-price fields, color pickers, and date pickers. With the pro plan, you get a total of 16 add-on field options with the latter. Conditional logic
  • The WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate plugin also comes pre-built with conditional logic functionality. This means you can show or hide extra fields for your products based on the selection your customers make. For instance, when the “Add a gift card” checkbox field is selected, a text field will appear that lets users enter their greetings. When a customer makes their choice, new fields will appear showcasing hidden product options that otherwise might not be relevant to your users. The Pro tier plan also offers advanced conditional logic options such as the ability to show or hide fields based on the cost of products in the customer’s cart. For more information on this, you can go over our guide on conditional product options and add-ons in WooCommerce.
  • One risk of assigning too many extra add-ons to a product is that the product page might look messy and overwhelming. With, WooCommerce Products Add-Ons Ultimate Pro you can mitigate this by organizing fields into groups and displaying them in layout styles such as tabs or accordions.
Displaying products in tabs.
  • The plugin lets you set pricing rules around add-ons. You can assign a cost per field/add-on (for example, if you own a coffee shop you can increase the price if a customer adds a flavoring, whipped cream, oat milk, etc.); and with text fields, you can even add a price per character (which is ideal for print-on-demand stores). On the other hand, you’re also able to assign negative pricing as a way of offering discounts to customers to incentivize them to make purchases. With the pro plan, you can also add a percentage price instead of fixed prices.
  • You have the option to set add-ons on individual products, or you can create global fields and assign them to multiple products or categories which saves time for you as you set up products in the backend.

Product variations in WooCommerce offer a powerful way for store owners to present diverse styles of products in a user-friendly manner. They allow customers to choose from an array of options, such as size, color, or material, all conveniently displayed on a single product page. By using variations, businesses can efficiently manage and showcase their products, enhancing the overall shopping experience.

However, any glitches or errors with your product variation display can have a detrimental impact on your site’s usability and even lead to lost sales. To maintain a seamless shopping experience and maximize conversions, it’s crucial to promptly troubleshoot and resolve any issues with WooCommerce variations not showing.

In this article, we’ll cover some of the most common issues with WooCommerce product variations not displaying properly and how to fix them. Then, we’ll provide some top tips for enhancing your product variation display with the help of some highly recommended plugins.

Common WooCommerce product variations issues

WooCommerce product variations play a pivotal role in offering customers a diverse range of choices when shopping online. Properly displaying these variations is vital for providing a seamless customer experience and maximizing sales potential. When variations are showcased correctly, it enhances product visibility, encourages user engagement, and ultimately boosts conversion rates.

Conversely, encountering issues with product variations not displaying properly can have adverse effects on your online store. Here are the most common issues WooCommerce store owners face when it comes to displaying product variations:

  • One of the common problems is the variations tab not showing correctly in the product data section of the WooCommerce backend, which hinders the store owner’s ability to configure and manage product options efficiently.
  • On the front-end, customers may face challenges when variation featured images or data fail to display correctly, leading to confusion and potential frustration during the shopping process.
  • Some or all variation options may not appear on the front-end, limiting customers’ ability to make personalized choices.

The major reasons behind the WooCommerce variation display not showing are incorrect settings, theme or plugin conflicts, and your version of WordPress, WooCommerce, or specific plugins being out of date. In the next section, we’ll dive deeper into how you can resolve these common issues on your WooCommerce site.

Step-by-step guide to fixing WooCommerce variations

Resolving most of the issues with WooCommerce variation display is often straightforward to do, even if you’re not very tech-savvy. Let’s go over the main steps for identifying and fixing issues with product variations in WooCommerce, starting with the two most likely culprits:

Missing price for variations

One of the most common reasons for product variations not displaying is the absence of prices for those variations. If you’ve created variations but haven’t assigned prices to them, customers won’t see the options when viewing the product. To fix this:

  • Go to the product editing page in WooCommerce.
  • Navigate to the “Variations” tab.
  • Ensure that each variation has a valid and appropriate price assigned.

Variation marked as out of stock

If a variation is marked as out of stock, it won’t be displayed to customers who are browsing your store. To address this:

  • Access the product editing page for the affected product.
  • Visit the “Variations” tab.
  • Check the stock status of each variation. If a variation is out of stock, either update the stock quantity or mark it as “In Stock” if applicable.

Verify product variation settings

If your product variations have assigned prices and are in stock, then it could be you haven’t configured your variations correctly. Follow these steps to verify and configure your product variation settings:

1. Accessing the product edit page:

  • Log in to your WooCommerce admin panel.
  • Navigate to the “Products” tab and select “All Products.”
  • Locate the product for which you want to manage variations and click “Edit.”

2. Configuring attributes and terms:

  • Within the product edit page, navigate to the “Attributes” tab.
  • Ensure that you’ve selected the appropriate attributes for your product. If you need to create a new attribute, you can create a global product attribute by going to WooCommerce>Products>Attributes. Alternatively, you can create a custom product attribute directly in the product page backend, by following the steps below:
    • Click the “Add” button next to the “Custom product attribute” dropdown.
    • Provide a name for the attribute, such as “Logo.”
    • Add attribute values (e.g., “Yes” and “No”) that are relevant to your product.
    • Check the boxes to make the attribute visible on the product page and available for variations.

3. Adding variation details:

  • Scroll down to the “Variations” section on the product edit page.
  • Choose the “Create variations from all attributes” option and click “Go.”
  • WooCommerce will generate variations based on the attributes and terms you’ve set up.
  • Review each variation to ensure accurate pricing, inventory levels, and other relevant details.
Verify product variation settings

4. Saving changes:

  • Once you’ve configured your product variations, click the “Update” button to save your changes.

e. Preview and test:

  • Visit the product page on your WooCommerce storefront to see how the variations are displayed to customers.
  • Test the functionality by selecting different attribute combinations and verifying that prices and availability update accordingly.

Check theme compatibility

If there are integration issues between your current theme and WooCommerce, it could lead to problems with displaying variations. The best way to check this is to test with a default WooCommerce theme:

  • To isolate the issue and determine if it’s related to your current theme, temporarily switch to a default WooCommerce theme like “Storefront.”
  • Visit your website and navigate to a product page with variations. Check if the variations are displayed correctly with the default theme.
  • If the issue is resolved with the default theme, it suggests that there might be a compatibility issue with your original theme.
Check theme compatibility

Resolve plugin conflicts

Conflicts between plugins can lead to unexpected behavior, including the incorrect display of WooCommerce variations. To ensure variations are shown as intended, follow these steps to identify and resolve potential plugin conflicts:

1. Update plugins and WordPress core:

  • Keeping your plugins, including WooCommerce, up-to-date is crucial for a seamless online store experience. Outdated plugins can lead to compatibility issues.
  • Regularly check for updates in your WordPress admin panel under “Plugins” > “Installed Plugins.”
  • Update all plugins and the WordPress core to their latest versions.

2. Clear browser cache:

  • Browser caching can sometimes cause older code to be loaded, affecting the display of your variations.
  • Clear your browser’s cache and cookies to ensure you’re viewing the most recent version of your website.

3. Deactivate plugins methodically:

  • To identify a potential conflicting plugin, deactivate all plugins except for WooCommerce.
  • Test your product pages with variations to see if the issue is resolved. If it is, you’ve confirmed that a plugin is causing the conflict.
  • Reactivate each plugin one by one, testing your variations after each activation.
  • If the issue reappears after activating a specific plugin, you’ve likely found the culprit.

4. Update or replace conflicting plugins:

  • Once you’ve identified the conflicting plugin, check if an update is available. Sometimes, plugin authors release updates to address compatibility issues.
  • If an update doesn’t resolve the conflict, consider searching for alternative plugins that offer similar functionality but are more compatible with your WooCommerce setup.

5. Reach out for support:

  • If you’re unable to identify or resolve the plugin conflict on your own, reach out to the plugin’s support team or community forums for assistance.
  • Provide them with detailed information about the issue, including any error messages or unexpected behavior you’ve observed.

Regenerate thumbnails

In some instances, you may encounter a situation where product thumbnails within WooCommerce fail to display correctly. This can subsequently lead to the absence of featured images for product variations on your website. If you’re encountering this issue, regenerating thumbnails can often be a simple and effective solution. Follow these steps to regenerate thumbnails for your WooCommerce site:

1. Navigate to the thumbnail regeneration tool:

  • Access your WordPress admin panel.
  • Go to “WooCommerce” in the left-hand menu.
  • Choose “Status.”
  • Click on the “Tools” tab.

2. Regenerating the thumbnails

  • Within the “Tools” section, locate the “Regenerate shop thumbnails” option.
  • Click the “Regenerate” button associated with this option.
  • The regeneration process may take some time, depending on the number of products and images on your site.
  • Once the process is complete, you’ll receive a notification confirming the successful regeneration of thumbnails.
Regenerate thumbnails

3. Checking variation images:

  • Navigate to a product page that has variations and featured images.
  • Verify that the thumbnails and featured images for variations are now correctly displayed.

4. Repeat as needed:

  • If you continue to experience thumbnail-related issues, you can repeat the thumbnail regeneration process as necessary.
  • Regularly regenerating thumbnails can also be beneficial when you make significant changes to your products or website design.

Enhancing your WooCommerce product variation display with plugins

Using plugins on your WooCommerce site allows you to enhance the display and functionality of your WooCommerce variable products.

While WooCommerce’s default functionality for displaying variations is a good start, it only lets you show variations in a dropdown list. This isn’t the best for product discovery or user experience on your online store.

Next, let’s take a look at two recommended plugins that help you enhance your WooCommerce product variation display.

We’re going to see how both the WooCommerce Product Table Ultimate and WooCommerce Better Variations plugins can help improve the display of your product variations.

The Show quantities on add-to-cart column dropdown menu lets you specify whether customers can set and add their desired product quantities from the product table to their shopping cart or not. You can also specify which products will be displayed in a table-style layout using the Product Source.

The WooCommerce Product Table Ultimate plugin also lets you show variations as separate rows, dropdown lists in the table itself, or set the table to redirect users to the product page when they select a variable product. For this, make sure to select Yes for both Enable add selected button and Enable add all button drop-down fields.

Once you’re done setting up the product table, click on the Save changes button at the bottom to continue.

Displaying “popular products” in WooCommerce can be a great opportunity to upsell or cross-sell products to customers. It helps boost sales and can help you improve the customer experience and product visibility on your WooCommerce site.

While WooCommerce by default offers some functionality to display popular products using shortcodes, you can use plugins to take this to the next level.

In this article, we’ll show you three methods to display popular products on your WooCommerce store and demonstrate how you can level up your popular product display with the help of WooCommerce Product Table Ultimate and WooCommerce Order Bump.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the major advantages of displaying popular products on your WooCommerce store:

  • Boost sales and average order value (AOV). If you’re advertising a list of popular products clearly on your shop’s product pages, the main shop page, or the checkout pages, it creates more opportunities for upselling or cross-selling. As a result, it helps increase sales and encourages shoppers to spend more which ultimately boosts the average order value.
  • Improve customer experience. Displaying best-selling products to your customers as recommendations can streamline the shopping experience on your online store. It helps your customers quickly find what they’re looking for.
  • Showcase social proof. By displaying products that are popular with your existing customers, you can increase customer trust by demonstrating the high quality of the products that you stock at your online store.
  • Increase product visibility. Products that you list as “popular” don’t necessarily have to actually be selling well. You can use a “popular products” list as a way of increasing visibility for your underperforming or new product lines in order to help give them a boost.

You can use a “popular products” list as a way of increasing visibility for your underperforming products or new product lines to help give them a boost.

Here, we’ll show you the best way to identify which products to show as “popular products” on your WooCommerce store. Then we’ll look at different ways you can display them on your online store for maximum impact.

One of the easiest ways to identify which products on your WooCommerce site should be selected as the “popular products” is to analyze which products are selling the best. Fortunately, WooCommerce by default has built-in functionality that lets you do this.

To get started, navigate to WooCommerce → Reports and click on the Sales by product link under the Orders tab.

Find popular products in WooCommerce

Here you can see how well individual products on your WooCommerce site are performing. The Product search tab lets you select specific products from your online store to see how well they are selling. You can also check which products from your WooCommerce site are selling the best using the Top sellers tab.

If you offer free products on your WooCommerce site, you can view which ones are the most popular by checking the Top freebies tab. Additionally, you can also see which products are earning your store the most revenue using the Top earners page.

You can also adjust the period that you want to check the product sales data for. For example, you can only view the product’s performance for the last 7 days, the current month or the previous one, the current year, or define a custom time range yourself.

When selecting popular products from your WooCommerce site, it’s important to monitor and update your list of popular products regularly. This ensures that your product recommendations remain relevant to your audience.

It’s also important to keep up with the ongoing industry trends and seasonal demands to better identify which products are likely to become popular items on your online store. Remember that you don’t necessarily need to display your best-selling products as “popular products” on your WooCommerce site. Instead, it’s better to display underperforming products or new product lines to give their sales a boost.

One of the easiest ways to display a list of popular products on your WooCommerce site is by using shortcodes, and here are the benefits of using them:

  • Flexible placement. Shortcodes can be used anywhere on your WooCommerce site to display popular products. You can even include them in the sidebar by using WooCommerce’s built-in shortcodes widget.
  • Straightforward setup. You don’t have to install any third-party services to display popular products on the front-end. You can use built-in WooCommerce shortcodes even if you don’t have any coding knowledge for displaying popular products.
  • Fully customizable. You can use different shortcodes to display different product lists on different pages of your store, creating a more tailored experience for your customers.

To start displaying your popular products using shortcodes, you will first need to identify the shortcode you want to use. Here are two of the most commonly used shortcodes:

[products limit="3" columns="3" skus="xxx, yyy, zzz"]

This shortcode lets you adjust the number of products you want to display and how many columns you want to show them in.

Popular products shortcode

Replace “xxx, yyy, zzz” with product SKUs and add them to the shortcode to display specific products from your WooCommerce site.

Popular products shortcode preview
[products orderby="popularity" limit="5"]

You can also use this shortcode to display your store’s top five most popular products by sales.

Products orderby shortcode in WooCommerce

You can adjust the limit and add a “column” parameter similar to the other shortcode we created earlier.

Popular products shortcode preview

Now with a better understanding of the shortcode you want to use to showcase popular products, we can start adding the shortcode to any page, post, or widget.

To add a shortcode to any product page, simply use the shortcode in the product’s description at the back-end of your site.

Product short description

You can also display a custom call to action (CTA) message to capture the customer’s attention.

Short description product page

Additionally, you can add the WooCommerce popular products display shortcode to a widget. For this, navigate to Appearance → Widgets and add a new shortcode widget to any part of your WooCommerce site.

Widget shortcode

Paste the shortcode in the text editor and click on the Update button to continue.

WooCommerce popular products in sidebar

This will let you display popular products as widgets anywhere on your WooCommerce site.

Limitations of using shortcodes

While displaying popular products using shortcodes works, there are some potential limitations to using these on your online store:

  • Limited visual display options. While shortcodes work great for displaying popular products, they don’t offer a lot of customization options in terms of how they appear on the front-end.
  • Manual process. Another major disadvantage to using WooCommerce shortcodes is that you have to manually add them to each page of your site. For instance, If you want to add popular products to many different pages, you’ll need to add the shortcode manually each time. This can be time-consuming, especially if you have a large product catalog.

However, the good news is that you can overcome both of these limitations with the help of dedicated plugins that we’ll cover in the following sections.

One of the alternative ways to displaying popular products on your WooCommerce site is by using the WooCommerce Product Table Ultimate plugin, which lets you create fully customizable product tables.

The intuitive plugin helps store owners overcome the display issues of using shortcodes by giving you more flexibility over how you display your store’s popular products.

Let’s talk about some of the main features of the WooCommerce Product Table Ultimate plugin that make it the perfect option for displaying popular products in WooCommerce:

  • Sortable and filterable product tables. The robust plugin makes it possible to display a wider range of popular products on your online store. The built-in search bars and filters make it easier for customers to find exactly what they’re looking for.

  • Customizable display options. Since product tables are fully customizable, you can choose which product data you want to display and configure the exact products you want to show in the “popular products” product table.

How to set up a popular products table

The WooCommerce Product Table Ultimate plugin is also very easy to set up on your WooCommerce site, even if you’re not tech-savvy. To get started, get the plugin and install it on your WooCommerce site.

Next, navigate to WooCommerce → Settings → Product Table Ultimate and click on the Licence link from the top.

Enter the license key given to you at the time of purchase and click on the Activate button to continue.

Now that the plugin is installed and activated on your WooCommerce site, it’s time to start configuring your product tables. For this, navigate to WooCommerce → Settings → Product Table Ultimate and click on the General link from the top.

You can specify which columns to show on the product table by default using the Columns field. The Product Source field lets you specify which products you want to display in the product table. You can also choose how variable products appear in product tables using the Variations Display dropdown field.

This will display checkboxes next to each product row and let shoppers add multiple products to their cart at once in one click. Now there are two ways you can display the product table anywhere on your WooCommerce site:

With a shortcode

Product table shortcode

While the shortcode will display the product table you configured using the plugin’s settings, you can also fine-tune the table using shortcode parameters.

Using the block editor

You can add the Product Table Ultimate block to any page or post on your WooCommerce site to display product tables.

Let’s discuss the WooCommerce Order Bump plugin’s main features that make it an ideal option for store owners looking to display popular products better:

  • Flexible layout options. The WooCommerce Order Bump plugin offers multiple layout options for displaying a modal pop-up with your shop’s popular products. This way, you can display your popular products in a more visually appealing way on the front-end to encourage upsells and cross-sells.

  • Apply order bumps in bulk. Using the plugin you can create order bumps that display for all products in your catalog, specific products, or products that share a specific category or attribute.

This gives you more control over which products are displayed as popular products on your online store.

Using the Bump Content metabox, add a Heading that shoppers will see on the front-end and specify the “popular products” in the Bump Products field.

Bump content

While you can add custom products, you can also use the upsells or cross-sells products that are attached to the products in the customers’ cart. The Layout dropdown field lets you choose the layout of the modal popup and how the bump products appear in them.

In addition to this, you can also select the Display Cart Button and Display Checkbox Button checkboxes to display the cart button and checkboxes. This lets shoppers add multiple products to their cart at once.

Discounts

The Discounts section lets you add either a fixed or percentage-based discount to your order bumps. This is great for encouraging shoppers to make purchases and helps increase the average order value on your online store.

Once you’re ready, make sure to click on the Publish button to continue.

To choose where the popular products display will pop up on the front-end of your WooCommerce site, navigate to WooCommerce → Settings → Order Bump.

Bump location

Using the Bump Location dropdown field, you can display the order bump on either the single product pages, the cart page, or the checkout page. You can also choose what happens next after the customer adds products to their cart using the order bump.

Once you’re ready, make sure to click on the Save changes button to continue.

The Checkbox layout lets customers quickly select more products after they add the primary product they were interested in to their cart.

The Product layout lets you display additional quantity selectors and show popular products in a more visually-appealing way.

Product layout

Displaying popular products or listing your top-selling products on your WooCommerce site is a great way to boost sales, increase average order value, enhance product visibility and user experience, and show social proof to customers to increase customer trust.

While you can use WooCommerce default shortcodes to display popular products anywhere on your WooCommerce site, you are limited with design options and it requires a lot of manual labor, especially if you have a large product catalog. This is why it’s best to use dedicated plugins like WooCommerce Product Table Ultimate and WooCommerce Order Bump to improve this functionality.
