File names[edit]

@Elli: Hello, thanks for renaming, could you please also rename all the files in the Category:Columns of Gediminas which only has a text "Kalumny"? Because Kalumny simply means Columns and these are not some ordinary columns, but the Columns of the Gediminids (Gediminas), therefore I think that all texts of "Kalumny" in the files names should be replaced with "Columns of the Gediminids (Gediminas)"? -- Pofka (talk) 18:41, 20 May 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Pofka: awesome, I'll get to renaming shortly. Though, I'm slightly concerned about some of these - one like File:Kalumny. Калюмны (P. Böse, 1742).jpg seems quite reasonable, since there's not a lot of context, but one like File:Jury Narymontavič, Pahonia-Kalumny. Юры Нарымонтавіч, Пагоня-Калюмны (1709).jpg already has a name that seems like it'd pretty descriptive, so I'm not sure if a rename is necessary there. Thoughts? @Elli: Both names: Columns of the Gediminids and Columns of Gediminas are widely used. The English Wikipedia article is named as Columns of Gediminas, while the Columns of the Gediminids is a redirect page. Gediminas is a dynasty's founder name, while Gediminids is the name of the dynasty. As a result, I think both of them fits, especially when it is only a short version "(Gediminas)", not "(Columns of Gediminas)" in the brackets. -- Pofka (talk) 19:28, 20 May 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Changing the Belarusian filenames to English[edit]

Hello. I noticed that you have changed several Belarusian filenames to English providing the wrong reason: Criterion 2 (meaningless or ambiguous name). Actually, Belarusian Latin Kalumny corresponds to Belarusian Cyrillic Калюмны, so the provided criterion can not be applied — all the names were in Belarusian, not in both English and Belarusian. No, Kalumny means just Columns. And these are not just Columns, but the Columns of Gediminas. It seems like in Belarusian, Калюмны does indeed refer to these columns particularly - I guess they were quite significant? Unsure of what to do here but I think it's important to get some form of consensus. I'll be happy to revert these though I don't wanna move too hastily and cause more of a mess. According to the interwiki linking Belarusian be-tarask:Калюмны (Belarusian Latin: Kalumny) clearly corresponds to en:Columns of Gediminas, so there was no real need to clarify the meaning. Unfortunately, the user who requested the renaming has no knowledge in Belarusian. Maybe, that's why this misunderstanding happened. The initial image name set is the best choice for Belarusian language. Elli, you are absolutely right. He is just writing some kind of non-senses. Columns might be of buildings, etc., but these are the Columns of Gediminas. You have done everything properly and there is no need to revert anything. See name of the category. Kalumny from Belarusian translates to Columns. That's it. So there are no problems with these renaming. Imagine if the article of Columns of Gediminas would be named as Kalumny or Columns. That would be a complete non-sense. It certainly seems like you are right here. I will be away for approx 1.5-2.5 hours starting now (sorry, have to do something off of the website). Following that, I'll move the files back to their original locations, unless there is a convincing reason not to. I am very sorry for the inconvenience this caused. I did try to verify with other people I knew who spoke similar languages that this was a reasonable move, but this sadly did not work effectively (I did not personally know any Belarus speakers). @Elli: See: Columns of Gediminas (English Wikipedia), Gediminaičių stulpai (Lithuanian Wikipedia), Gediminassäulen (German Wikipedia), Kolonoj de la Gediminidoj (Esperanto Wikipedia), Colonne di Gediminas (Italian Wikipedia), Ģediminaišu stabi (Latvian Wikipedia), Słupy Giedymina (Polish Wikipedia). We must include Gediminas or Gediminids in its name because it is not clear what kind of columns are these. There are no reasons why non-full Belarusian name should be authoritative version. By the way, the full name is Коломны Гедимина in Belarusian, but there are no reasons why we should rename Lithuanian dynasty coat of arms names from English to Belarusian. Keep it as it is. Kazimier Lachnovič is known for anti-Lithuanian edit warring and edits (see edit warring at: Pahonia, which was locked multiple times). PLEASE KEEP IT AS IT IS, because that's the name of the category in Commons. Why they should be named as those in the category of Category:Columns when it is a Lithuanian dynastic sign? This English name is the most frequently used name online: Columns of Gediminas (232 000 results in Google search). Please do not perform anti-Lithuanian actions by request of a Belarusian. Kazimier has been humiliating Lithuanians for over a year (or even more), for example, see these edits here: 1, 2, 3. Коломны Гедимина has nothing in common with Belarusian. It's pretty clear that you don't know Belarusian, because the Belarusian name of Gediminas is Гедзімін, not Гедимин. I should also notice that the name Калюмны (without any additions) is provided for the coat of arms in the Encyclopedia of the Grand Duchy of Lithuanian (Vol. 2, P. 21), published by the National Academy of Belarus in 2007. I'd like to stay out of this dispute going forward but I am very disappointed in Pofka here - controversial renames should not be passed off without discussion. Image set -- Hunts of Maximilian[edit]

Hi! I'm rather new in commons, can you explain me what's wrong with wy rename request in Category:Hunts_of_Maximilian_-_Louvre_series?

My idea was to select 12 best images for 12 tapestries in this serie to 1) show which images are to use if you don't want to browse the whole category searching for the whole set (I spend more than hour doing this, I want to capitalise on this knowledge to help others), and 2) to show the correct order of tapestries in the original set (starting from march to february).

I'm perfectly aware that authors are different and resolutions are different. I was in Louvre recently to took pictures of these tapestries to replace then low-res / out of focus images with my pictures. I thought this will bi the best way to update all Wikies using low-res images without manually editing every of them.

@Green fr: thanks for your comment. Image sets are actually quite a narrow definition on Commons - either for things used in templates (which these are not), or things that are unambiguously set-like (mainly, pages of books). I think it would be reasonable to do the rename, for the reason you mentioned, but your request wasn't clearly explained (also, generally more cautious about renaming files that are already in use in many places, that tends to cause more frustration among some). Categories for discussion closures[edit]

I don’t mind that you closed some of these discussions but you could use a better rationale. Almost all categories are part of the larger category tree. @FredWalsh: sure, but those discussions were years old, and no one else agreed with changing. And "part of a larger category tree" means that the categories are analogous to other, larger ones - sure, maybe the "2011 XYZ" doesn't have a lot of items, but the "2012 XYZ" and "2013 XYZ" do. thank you, to use the {{Current}} tag is very helpful suggestion. I overwrite files as military organization are difficult to research and when new information surfaces I overwrite the older incomplete version. Alternate History Long deletions[edit]

@Elli: The reason why I did those wikiboxes was for alternate history. I see that on Reddit, alternatehistory.com, etc. And I wanted to make a wikibox. I know it was fake and you can delete them if you will, but in all honesty, I do not know an alternate to make a fake wikibox without using wiki sandbox. I am new to wiki so I may have made a rookie mistake. I think there is something about alternate history on this site and I wanted to give it a try. Delete them if you will they have little use. Presidential Maps[edit]

@Elli I’m in some what of a dispute with another user over him editing presidential maps that are less geographically correct. To make them look cleaner in their opinion. I know you have been in a dispute with this person before over the 2020 United States Minnesota Senate Election Map when you were trying to make the lines more detailed.

Renaming Firefox logos[edit]

@Elli: Hi there. I've realized that you've reverted some file rename requests. I want to explain that I am trying to rename many Firefox logo files so that the filenames are consistent in Category:Former_Mozilla_Firefox_logos and Category:Mozilla_Firefox_logos. I am renaming files to follow the format Firefox EDITION_NAME logo (OPTIONAL_VARIANT), YEAR.FILE_EXTENTION. I wasn't sure whether to keep the comma before the year. There were also a few files that had outdated names (e.g. "New Logo") that are now corrected. This is why I requested renaming files such as File:Mozilla_Firefox_logo_2009.png. This also helps links on https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q698 appear more organized. I hope this clarifies why I've made the requests. Please let me know if I am doing anything incorrectly. Thank you. This is actually a known issue when moving audio files on commons. It can take quite a lot of time for issues to be straightened out everywhere they're used. This is a good reason to be hesitant to moving audio files and I haven't been able to find any explenataion for the large amounts of renames that User:Olaf has requested. I think it would probably be a good idea to wait with further renames until he has responded to my questions about this on his talkpage. TommyG (talk) 12:49, 20 August 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Maybe, but Criterion 4 moves should really include some reference to what problem they are trying to solve. @TommyG: For at least 15 years, there has been a standard of the file names inside Category:Pronunciation and its subcategories, except Lingua Libre categories. It's always the language code, minus sign, and the word which was pronounced. Check for example category:French pronunciation where 99% of filenames start with "Fr-". There is at least one bot (pl:wikt:user:Olafbot in Polish Wiktionary), which adds the audio files to corresponding Wiktionary pages, providing the names have this form. The only thing I did, was harmonizing the names, so they could match the general rule. I believe it perfectly fits the stated reason "To harmonize the names of a set of images so that only one part of all names differs". However, I wasn't aware of the Mediawiki bug. 2022 US House Elections Map[edit]

Fl-23 is not a Dem pickup, the article does not list it as such and neither does it claim that Indiana or Florida seats belonging to a Republican and Democrat that are currently vacant were pickups for either party, so Fl-23 should not be singled out incorrectly. This map must be in line with previous elections, which do not show vacancies won by the previous party as "pickups" because it's highly misleading considering it was not a new seat won by the party or a gain from the opposite party, it's just keeping the seat. @Bill Williams: The Indiana seat isn't shown as a pickup because it was filled for the remainder of the congressional term by a simultaneous special election. The other Florida seat was picked up by Republicans but if Democrats won it it also would've been shown as a Democratic pickup.
Given that these seats are part of the seat change metric, they should also be shown as pickups on the map imo. But I won't fight you on this if you revert again, since previous maps don't show them so it makes more sense to get consensus to change this across all past elections. updating maps[edit]

@Elli dude i am sorry but i am not updating all the maps a second time. Do you know how long that took me? Can we just finally agree on a style and stick with it? I really don't want to go back in and keep updating these maps especially when it's just a very minor change i barely see a difference so the average reader likely isn't either. i was reluctant about even doing it the first place because i knew i would likely be the only few who were actually going to go in and update all these maps. @Putitonamap98: You don't need to go back over and update the maps again. Since you've updated all of them to the same sort of map, it should be relatively easy to use a script to update them a second time.
Sorry about the confusion, btw. I would've preferred you not go in and mass-update hundreds/thousands of maps until we got a clearer consensus and agreement on what shapes to use, but I wasn't clear enough about that. @Elli ok i didn't know we were still talking about them, it's been since late 2020 or 2021 i think but i thought since we labeled the new shapes under standard those were the ones we used. me and gordfather have already been updating the maps and have a majority of them changed now. i just wanted the maps to be consistent and i want to go ahead and get rid of the old ones with the really simplified shapes we had used for years.
but anyways a question about this script. how does it work exactly? does it only auto update all the maps with the same style including the really old ones? and does it also update election primary maps and referendums?
